My brother is undergoing a (hopefully) life-saving transplant in a few days. I am trying to talk my dad into a WDW vacation (the first real family vacation ever - I am 26). He is interested in the Fort Wilderness cabins. Here's my question: Do we need a car? I swore never to do WDW again w/o one (one trip at ASMc with and one at DI w/o), but if we can get to the MK by boat and then to Epcot by monorail, I may be able to cut that out of the budget and make the trip even more enticing for him. Do you think that it is time-prohibitive to do it that way and then take the buses to the other parks? Help!

You should be aware that FW "shares" buses with WL. Going TO the parks, the buses stop at WL first, then loop back to FW to pick up there, then on to the parks. One exception: the bus to AK takes this route: WL to FW to BB (if open), then to AK. So you have to plan extra travel time into the schedule if you plan to use the bus to get to Epcot, MGM, or AK.

The boats go to FW first, then stop at WL if there are seats/room left.

I don't know about transport back to FW. Maybe someone else can advise on that.

The transportation to/from FW is very good! You can take a bus or boat to MK, then transfer to the monorail to get to Epcot. You can take a bus directly to AK or MGM.

One thing you might think about is renting a golf cart during your stay! They are wonderful for getting around FW. You can drive it right to the main bus stops, instead of waiting at the bus stop at your loop. And, they're nice to quick trips to the trading posts, marina, restaurants, etc.

The cabins are beautiful - you will really enjoy them!

Golf Carts are around $45 a day.
They are great for within the campground.
Buses for Epcot leave from the front of the campground at the Outpost depot. We never waited very long.
MK boat launches are available at the Marina
My father is disabled so the golf cart has become invaluable and well worth the expense. Plus he loves having us drive him around or go down to the Trails End to fill his much with coffee in the morning.
