We used to stay at the cabins before we bought
DVC, so we haven't used points to stay there. But we used to love staying there.
It's a great place to stay with young kids. Like DVC, you have the full kitchen setup, however no washer/dryer in the cabins. The laundry is at the pool. A couple of pluses over DVC: daily maid service, and (from our kids point of view), bunk beds! We also enjoyed the privacy the cabins offer, the fact you can drive your car right up to your door, and the different activities you can do at Fort Wilderness.
We bought DVC because we felt we vacation there enough to make an investment and we love having the kitchen. We love DVC, especially the jacuzzi tub at the end of a long day (none in cabin!

). We bought at VWL because it has a similar atmosphere to Fort Wilderness and we go over there for the campfire, pony rides, etc.
My kids have asked if we are ever going back to "our cabin." It isn't out of the question that we will ever use points to stay there, we may. But we really love VWL and love the more "luxurious" accomodations (not that the cabins are bad, they're very comfortable and nice). But like you said, the points can be higher so I guess it would depend on time of year, how many points we would use, etc.
Sorry this is so long, if you have any other questions I'll try and answer them for you.
