Fort Wilderness Cabins info

Hey, I'm planning a trip as a treat for my family. Everything I've read about Fort Wilderness seems great, but there doesn't seem to be much information about it here in the threads. Our dates are 12/6-12/13 '08. There's going to be 5 of us, which is one of the main reasons I chose the cabins, and plus it has a full kitchen, which will cut down on the cost of food significantly. So if anyone has any info, tips or anything about Fort Wilderness cabins, I'd really appreciate it! I want to be very informed about everything before I make my final decision (which has to be very soon...) Thanks you guys!

You might want to go over to the Camping at Disney World board. There are lots of helpful people over there regarding Fort Wilderness.

I stayed in a Fort Wilderness cabin this past August. I really enjoyed staying there. It was nice to be able to stock a full sized fridge with drinks and food. Though we did not cook in the kitchen, besides using the microwave, we did use the grill outside. If you do plan on using the grill bring foil to cover the grill, as they are not the cleanest or you couild just clean it. The bedroom has a full sized bed and bunk beds and the living room has a sofa and a hide-away bed. There are two tvs. We found it nice to be able to go back to your "own" place after a day in the parks and lounge on the couch or chair. One thing we found out on the second to last day is that you can get breakfast to go. They give you a large carry out tray and a smaller one to fill. One tray was good enough for at least two people!
Also, the boat is convienent to take over to MK. And I highly suggest getting a golf cart!

Hi there! We LOVE the cabins for many of the same reasons that made you choose them. Our past 2 trips have been with our 3 kids (all "adult" age--well, this last trip they really were adults ) The cabins are very spacious and comfortable, and having a fully equipped kitchen was great; we ate breakfast in the room each morning, and the kids made snacks each night as well--after eating all day!! Although many complain about the transportation, and feel that a golf cart is a necessity, we've never felt that way; we have used our car for dinner reservations that were at other resorts. We'll be there this year the same time as you --Dec 7-14--a thank you trip for my parents If you have any specific questions, please don't hesitate to ask--I'll try and answer!

Hey, thanks for the great info! Yea, I've heard mixed reviews about the golf carts, whether they are a necessity or not. I had kind of figured we'd rent two (we'd need two since there are 5 of us) for at least one day- the day we have planned to just lounge around the campground, go horseback riding, etc. But I'm not really sure if it's worth it to rent golf carts for the whole week... So you're going the same week? that's great! see ya there!!

We plan on renting a cart this trip to view everyone's Christmas light displays (just for 1 night) since you can't use your car as transportaion within the campground. This is new for us--in the past we've only gone in the summer.

golf carts are great for looping. Campers are like family members. Most are just laid back, kind people. You'll enjoy the decorations and getting to know your neighbors.

One golf cart may be enough for 5. We fit 5 adults, very snug and I had sit on 1/2 of a lap and the arm bar. If you are traveling with 2 adults and 3 kids it may be possible to fit everyone fine.

Yea, I thought about getting two rooms at a value resort, but going this way at the Fort, we get to have a full kitchen, and no noisy neighbors right next to you or above you. So I guess one golf cart for 5 ppl is enough? That sounds do-able. Thanks for all the info guys!

We just got back from there and LOVED it! We said that we wouldn't need a golf cart when planning for the trip, but after having been in a cabin, it is a must have. We have 3 little kids and our cabin was a good 2 miles or so from the marina, Trains End, and the Revue. There is no parking down there for a car but there is for a golf cart. The kids had a blast riding on them and it really gave us some great memories from the trip.

One thing we found out on the second to last day is that you can get breakfast to go. They give you a large carry out tray and a smaller one to fill. One tray was good enough for at least two people!

How much did this cost?

I can't remember exactly but believe it was around $10. They also give you a cup for a cold beverage and a hot beverage as well. My mother and I went down to get breakfast to go for ourselves, my dad, my BF and my brother (all adults). We walked out with just two breakfast orders and it was more than enough! It is a self service bar so you can get what you want.


I forgot to add in my first message that at the fort it is a much different atmosphere than at one of the hotels. Everyone seems much friendly to each other at the fort. People wave to each other, say hi, etc. I think its the whole camping thing, every campground I've ever been to people are more laid back and much more friendly!

When we stayed at the Cabins we had a rental car and we rented a golf cart. We would definitely not want to stay again without having both a car and a golf cart. We used both extensively -- the golf cart to get around the huge property, and the car to get to the parks and other resorts.

It is 1 mile from the Outpost(check in) to the Settlement area, but with kids it can feel longer. There are however internal buses that will take you from your cabin loop to either Outpost or Settlement, so if you don't want to pay for the cart and you don't have to "be there now" the buses will be just fine. The cabins are served by the Purple internal route and it runs in continuous loops from Outpost to Settlement all day long.

So they don't have any parking (for cars) down by the marina? That's kinda odd... so it looks like a golf cart is a must. So if we were to take the boat over to MK, it would be ok to park our cart there all day? That was one thing I was kinda worried about. And I guess I didn't realize who spread out things were at the campground, but after looking at the layout, I'm going to request being in the 2100 or 2200 loop because it seems a little more central than the other loops. Anyone else have a favorite loop?

You can park the golf cart at the marina or at the bus stop all day. It is important to remember your cart number or put something on the cart to identify it when you return. I wouldn't worry about leaving the carts behind it will be fine.
As for a loop number I really liked my location, the stream was located behind mine and my parents cabins 2326 and 2328. I also noticed our cabins had a bigger "back yard" than others. No other cabins were behind us, just the woods and the stream. I did contimplate the 2100 and 2200 loops because of location but really liked the 2300 loop, esppecially our specific cabins.
Also, the bus stop was located across from our loop as weel, only a 1minute walk which was also convinent.

Hmm... I guess I'll have to keep the 2300 circle in mind when I go to make my reservations... which I need to do ASAP by the way!! I just need to make sure I have enough for the deposit because I'm a college student in the middle of my last semester of clinicals, so the hrs I can work are limited... anyway... thanks for the advice on the cabins! Sounds like it would be nice to have a little backyard space at the cabin for a cookout or something.
