Hi Guys. I haven't been on in a while, just looking for advice! I am taking my 82 year old father with us the first week in June to Disney along with my DH and DD. Has anyone stayed in the Fort Wilderness cabins? How are they? Would you go again. My DD thinks we're going to be "so crowded" but we won't be there during the day anyway! My dad will not be able to do parks so we wanted somewhere where he could move around a little and get outside. He is quite handicapped due to age and has lots of health problems. I may be crazy for attempting this! If anyone else has suggestions, please let me know. My DH is looking at DVC, but I don't think he could pull it off that fast. Thanks! I'm anxious to hear from all of you!

The cabins are fine but I wonder if it is what you really need. A cabin can hold four comfortably. The bedroom has a full and bunks and the living room has a pull down full. It is also nice to have a kitchen and large porch.

That said, you need to understand that the cabins are also isolated. They are in a heavily wooded area that has nothing but cabins, and civilization or any activity areas are 3/4 mile to a mile away. In other words unless your father gets out, walks to the bus depot outside one the "loops" the cabins are in and travels by bus to the activity area at Pioneer Hall, he is basically going to have nothing to do but sit in the cabin and watch the Disney Channel or on the porch and watch woods.

If that is fine then the cabins are a good choice. If you want him to be able to go out at a hotel you are in and see activities or at least see them from a balcony, then there are better choices, such as Animal Kingdom Lodge where you have a zoo in the back yard, Boardwalk where there is lots to see and watch on the boardwalk, go to ESPN for sports, and even watch the fireworks from Illuminations, or Poly or GF where there is the ability to see lots going on at the lake and even fireworks at night.

I suggest posting your questions on the DIS-abilities board. They will have a lot more insight as to what would be best for your father. The cabins are great, though!

I don't think you are crazy. We did the cabins with my dad a month before he died. He was very ill when we went but would not hear of us not going. We all went, kids grandkids as well as my mom and dad. Great memories of the time (he hid his illness well). He never went to the parks but waited each night for the kids to fill him in on the day's events. We called and checked on him many times during the day. We did rent a golf cart so he could get in and go for a ride sometimes. It worked out well. There were 6 of us in the cabin and it was fine. The rest of the group was in the next loop camping.

We are DVC members at the BWV. they are a wonderful place to stay just because of location and activities. I would recommend them too. Very roomy.

That is the best time to go! We went in 2000 the day after Thanksgiving and spent a week. The weather, crowds and decorations were fabulous. We have been several times different times of the year, but we made a pact to only come back in the fall. We attended MVMCP and that was worth every penny too! Great time of year, in fact, if all goes as planned we will back down there this year. Have fun!!!!!!!!!

Uhh-sorry for the above post. I thought I was responding to another one obviously! LOL

Thanks!
