My friend went to Mickey's backyard BBQ at Wilderness campgrounds yesterday. She was sitting on a wooden bench. When she got home she notice 3 very painful bites. She went to the doctor's today and he said that they are Brown Recluse bites. They are now very swollen and full of puss. Has anyone else had a spider bite at the campgrounds. I guess that is the risk of being in the outdoors.:confused3

We will be returning on Friday for our 3rd stay. It is a chance that you take anywhere when camping. Florida does seem to have it's share of nasty spiders. I have seen black widows at home and know of several people who have been bit in their own yards by brown recluse spiders. FW is probably now worse than anyplace. They can be very nasty. Have her keep an eye on the bites.

My sister-in-law was bitten (on the rear) by a brown recluse and was in the hospital over a week. They can be very very dangerous, make sure that your friend doesn't just treat it like it's no big deal, because it can have lasting effects.

Hmm ... just another reason to keep my Poly reservation and not move to Ft. Wilderness! :rotfl:

(I have a small spider phobia - that was just 1 reason I disliked living in Florida -- too many spiders!)

I don't think spiders can read. They could be at the Polynesian as well.

I know others have said this, but make sure your friend does exactly what the doctor told her. A member of our extended family was bitten by a brown recluse and had health problems for years afterward.

I just hate spiders. Yuck.

I sure hope your friend is ok. 1 bite is enough to make a person seriously ill and need medical attention. 3 bites is even worse. I got bit by a black widow in my sleep when I was 13. I found it in the corner of my room the morning I woke up with a green, yellow, purple and red patch surrounding a red dot on my arm. Pretty nasty stuff! Of course (luckily) I came through it just fine. But not everyone is as lucky.

Well, on the bright side...Fort Wilderness has Peacocks roaming free! We had one walk right up to me in my lawnchair next to our tent. If I can find the pictures (we just moved), I will post them.

We've cleaned off the spider webs (with spiders) on our Poly balcony every stay since 1981. Guess we all just have to live with creepy crawlies on vacation. :rotfl:

People - it was a joke directed at my own dislike of camping - not a slam on Ft. Wilderness! Lighten up, Francis!

Having lived in Florida, I know that no area is immune to all the creepy crawlies - I had a continuous infestation of spiders on my patio despite repeated visits from the exterminator!

Geez - people are so touchy! :confused3

Me thinks the replies were all meant to be light hearted as well.:thumbsup2

Not anymore. :( They were all relocated awhile ago.

Brown recluse spiders live up to their name as they aren't very aggressive at all. Most bites come from the spider being tangled up in clothing. True brown recluse spider bites are rare so it's not something that is going to happen regularly at the same place. And the spiders can live anywhere. About the only way to tell if the spider is a true brown recluse is by looking at its six eyes (most spiders have eight eyes). The six eyes are arranged in pairs.
