former smoking rooms at resorts?

I'm not sure where to post this b/c I'm not trying to start a debate, and any threads on smoking on the resorts board get merged into the 1000+ post thread on DSA's at the resorts, and the threads get closed on DVC since they don't pertain to DVC. I'm just trying to plan my trip, so hopefully someone here can help me out.

I am allergic to cigarette smoke and have tried to avoid the previously smoking rooms, especially since last summer we were given one and had to be moved after the first night b/c the smoke residue was still there. We are staying at a couple of different resorts than we have in the past, and at the resorts we usually stay at I know where the previously smoking rooms are and request a different building/floor.

Specifically if anyone has info from Beach Club Resort or Disney's Vero Beach Resort I would really appreciate the help. And if you can add any others that you know of that I can add to my list for future trips I'd appreciate it. Or if there's already a similar thread like this that I missed when I searched, please direct me to it.

Thanks!

It's been a couple of years since Disney has gone smoke-free in all of their resorts. I've stayed in rooms that were formerly smoking-optional rooms and did not smell smoke. This was at the Polynesian, not Beach Club or Vero Beach, but I'm sure that all traces of smoke would be gone by now. Have fun!

P.S. Have you tried asking this over on the Resorts Board??

I would agree that the smoke smell should be gone by now. However, there is always the chance that a recent occupant smoked in the room thinking nobody would notice (many smokers really don't think people can tell). About all you can do is summon hotel staff to the room to let them see for themselves why you are requesting a different room. Of course, if the staff member happens to be a smoker, he or she might be oblivious to the stink.

I know someone who went to Disney and smoked in the room after the changeover. Wait, I know three people who did that. Two of them are married and they did it in the same room on the same vacation. So I don't know if that counts as 2 total or 3 total.

But anyway, I doubt they're the only ones.

Now that there are no smoking rooms, you kind of have to count on the smokers to follow the rules. Sadly, not everyone is a rule follower.

I told one of them that you get "in trouble" if they find you smoking in the room and she asked what happened. Said I didn't know; I thought WDW charged you $300 or $500 or something. She made a "pfft" sound. As if to say, "Like I care about a stupid little fee." She can afford it, wouldn't care a bit...but they didn't even charge her.

If you are highly allergic to day-old or days-old smoke, you might want to consult your allergist before staying in any hotel anywhere.

While I'm not allergic to smoke, I'm allergic to many animals, new carpet, all sorts of scents, etc. I feel your pain. It sucks to travel with allergies. ::yes::

if i recall correctly, buildings 2, 3, 6, 7 and 9 at disney's pop century resort have always been non-smoking. we usually always request to stay in building 6 (70's building) because i'm highly allergic to cigarette smoke and this building is also quiet. sorry, i don't know anything about vero beach or beach club. you might try on the resorts board, that's where i originally got the pop info, but i can't find it now.

While I'm not allergic to smoke, I can smell it even if it's faint, and I can honestly say I haven't noticed a trace of smoke in the Disney resorts in quite some time. Of course, that doesn't mean it's gone entirely (as a pp mentioned, there are probably still folks that sneak a cigarette and Disney is never the wiser), but I think Disney did an excellent job of cleaning the odor out. I really don't think you'll have a problem.

Yeah - I don't think you have to worry about what rooms were smoking rooms 3 years ago. What you have to worry about are the smokers who choose to break the rules and smoke in the room.

We stayed at the Polynesian and some bonehead decided that they would smoke in their bathroom and blow the smoke in the exhaust fan. Guess where that smoke went? Right into our bathroom. We had to deal with this for DAYS. Every frickin morning we had to get ready in a cloud of smoke. Management couldn't do anything. There was no way to figure out where the smoke was coming from. We should have probably insisted on a room change but I didn't want to wast precious park time packing, changing rooms, and unpacking. Some people are just idiots and don't give a rat's patooty if they are negatively affecting someone else. Well, the world does revolve around THEM doesn't it. (I guess you can tell I'm still bitter about it)

If you smoke, please don't smoke in the hotel rooms or on the balcony. Please go to the designated smoking areas.

Thanks for the replies. I'm just a little cautious about this after our experience last summer at BWV. We were given a previously smoking room, and I didn't think anything of it at check-in b/c I too thought it had been long enough since the switch to a non-smoking resort and that the rooms had been cleaned out. All of the soft goods were perfectly fine, but I could tell the smoke residue was still there in the furniture and walls. Hopefully as more resorts on WDW property are refurbished it will become less of an issue for me. They're in the process of refurbishing BWV right now, so hopefully it won't be a problem when we stay there in the future. And maybe it had just been b/c someone didn't follow the rules right before we were there, but it seemed like more than just a one-time incident. DH says my nose is super-sensitive, and I guess he's right!

At least they were able to move us for the remainder of our stay after the first night, but we did have to pay the DVC room-change fee. One other reason I'm trying to find out - so we don't get stuck paying that fee again!
