what ride used to be in fantasyland at MK with the huge pool of water? it is at the character festival now. i think i remember that being a ride when i was young.

It was a favorite of my son.:bounce:

thanks for the reply. what type of ride was it? what did do? do you know what year it closed?

Boat ride based on movie of same name, didn't go under water though. Can't remember when it closed but it been at least 6 years.:earsboy: :sunny:  :earsgirl:

sounds like a fun ride. why was it shut down? they obviously didn't close it to make room for another ride.

20K Leagues was a submarine ride that did actually go under water. That, some say, was part of it's problem. My favorite rumor says that the darned things were such a pain to keep in working order that the technicians finally told a little white lie to the Upper Management, saying the boats leaked and were a potential hazzard to guests, thereby making all the Upper Management break out in hives at the thought of the words Hazzard and Guest in the same sentence. Outcome: the demise of 20KL.

Just a rumor, I'm sure, but it's been closed for years and years. ;)

The comments about 20k going underwater and NOT going underwater are BOTH right. The submarine was not a free-floating vehicle. It was on a track, and it was partially submerged so the riders had portholes that were a foot or two beneath the waterline (the "captain" on top had a view above the water).

It certainly wasn't fancy by any means. You would basically be going around and then come across a giant squid (that would wrap the tentacles around the ship), see some mermaids, ultimately you would discover the lost continent of Atlantis. Naturally it was hokey in the sense that no matter how far down you were sent (and the air bubbles past the porthole were cool) you always saw the waterline above you.

However, it was a unique attraction. It was very popular too as the lines were always significant (granted, the capacity wasn't all that great). I think it was a D-ticket under the old ticket system. But it's sorely missed as it really was a memorable ride that you just couldn't find anywhere else.

I don't know exactly when it closed, but I don't believe it was open when I was there in the Spring of 1995.

I always enjoyed it....I guess I'm dull, but hey, I'm also upset that Mr. Toad's Wild Ride is gone, and that COP is seasonal and won't be open when I'm there with my family in Dec.
