Hi everyone,
I am getting so confused as to what all of the different dining dress codes mean. Especially, what is the difference between formal and semi-formal??
Thank you!!! If you can provide pics that would be double helpful :)

It means different things to different people. Disney cruises are more casual than others. Cruise casual is basically enything dressier than levi's, tho you'll still see people in jeans on formal night. That can be a sore subject around here. You might run into a few tuxes on formal night, but they're few and far between. I wear a long dress or a cocktail dress for formal night, but am leaning toward nice slacks and a dressy top for our next cruise. If I can find one.

Put it this way, its your vacation. You can dresss anyway you want to on any given dinner night. I personally dont care if people want to look down on me for wearing nice khaki shorts and a polo on formal night. I am on a vacation where I typically dont want to shave or wear any type of formal clothes. My wife will wear a nice cocktail type dress and we dress the girls in their princess attire.

Again, its youre vacation, dress how you want and dont worry about anything else.

Quick reference to dress codes http://fashion.about.com/cs/glossary/a/partydefinition.htm

Black Tie (Formal)

A Black Tie invitation calls for formal attire. Men wear tuxedos, women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates.
Formal usually means the same as Black Tie, but in some trendier cities like New York or Los Angeles, it could mean a black shirt, no tie with a tux. Women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates.

Black Tie Optional

A Black Tie Optional or Black Tie Invited gives you the option of wearing a tuxedo or formal dress, but it should clue you into the formality of the event, meaning a dark suit and tie would be your other option. Women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates.

Semi-Formal

Semi-Formal or After Five means that tuxes are not required, nor are long dresses. An evening wedding (after 6 PM) would still dictate dark suits for him, and a cocktail dress for her. Daytime semi-formal events mean a suit for him and an appropriate short dress or dressy suit for her.
Business Formal is the same as Semi-Formal for him, but for women it suggests that women opt for more tailored dressy suits and dresses (nothing too slinky or sexy).

Cocktail Attire

Cocktail Attire means short, elegant dresses for her and dark suits for him.

Informal is often interpreted as the same as Casual but it actually calls for the same dress as Semi-Formal -- dark suits for him, short dresses for her -- especially when associated with a wedding or special event.

Festive Attire

Festive Attire is usually seen around the holidays, with the mood of the party being Informal or Semi-Formal. For her, it means to choose looks with a bit of sparkle or holiday bent (i.e. a beaded sweater with black pants, a red silk blouse with a black skirt).

Casual

Dressy Casual calls for dressed-up versions of casual looks. For him, it could be trousers and a sportcoat, for her a dressy pants look. Jeans, shorts, T-shirts and other casual looks are not appropriate for Dressy Casual.
Casual generally means anything goes.

I wore a dress every night to dinner and my husband wore a dress shirt and trousers. He did wear a tie when we dined at Royal Palace. We did see shorts and jeans worn by many at all 3 dining rooms.....I wouldn't stress too much over it :)

To piggy-back off your thread, I too am curious about attire for dinner. My fiancee owns 1 pair of slacks and there's no way he'll wear a suit coat, is it ok to just wear a nice button up dress shirt? Does he have to wear a tie? Thanks for the help, I just don't want us to be out of place:)

This will be fine. Tie is optional everywhere except Remy on the Dream. He can go to Palo in a button up dress shirt and slacks, and they'll be fine for all regular dinners.

The DCL cruises used to be a lot more "dress up" than they are not. I think a lot of that relates to airlines charging for luggage. While above posters have defined the classic terms of "formal" and "semi-formal," what you really see on the ships is more like "wear the nicest outfit your brought." I will typically wear the same dress on formal and semi night--a cocktail type dress. My DD will wear a ball gown on formal night and a dressy dress on semi (her choice...packing the formal is a pain). Men will be in everything from tux and military dress uniforms to jeans. Most are in a dress shirt and pants, some with a jacket. It's your vacation; you are free to follow the "suggestions" as you see fit.

Do note that it is NOT a dress code outside of the adults only restaurants. It is called "suggested attire" as far as the theme of the evening. There is also a statement that DCL "requests" no jeans in the dining rooms (at dinner). However, none of this outside the adult only restaurants has any enforcement. Provided you are wearing clothing including shoes, you will be admitted and served.

From the DCL website, if you need further information before you decide whether to book a cruise on Disney:

"However, you are requested to not wear tank tops, swim wear or shorts ... for dinner."

Thanks for the help! we can begin the packing and my fiancee is a lot less apprehensive now:)

I'm getting a bit stressed about this attire thing because I don't own that many nice outfits and don't own any dresses lol.....
But my take on it is becoming: I paid all this money to go on the cruise, I should be allowed to dress how I want to dress (as long as its appropriate:)).

Most people look very nice at dinner...not formal or semi formal. Most also DO NOT wear shorts, khakis will do just fine.

You don't need a dress. A decent pair of pants will do just fine. Also, you can wear the same clothes to more than one dinner (you're only wearing them for a couple of hours!) The same pants with different tops make for variety too.

So do not stress. No one will turn you away anywhere "as long as it is appropriate." The only places with an enforced dress code are the adult only restaurants.

This is a very hot topic and people dwell on the whole attire thing way more than they need to.

Don't stress...it is not that big of a deal. Nice clothes and you will be fine.

For hubby...dockers and some polos and button downs, you..capris or slacks, blouses, sundress, etc.

Not really up-to speed with terminologies used here with regards to formal attire. Can someone explain the difference in with pics ?
