Formal Dining Room Furniture - Question

Never heard of chalk paint. Does the grain of the wood still show through? I'm off to research...

You can dilute it so that wood grain will show through. Some of the paint is expensive but it goes a long way! I was surprised how far it goes! Some name brands; Annie Sloan, CeCe Cauldwell. It comes in great colors. It can also be used on fabric! There are also "recipes" to make your own on the internet. If you want to go a cheaper route. CeCe Cauldwell is non toxic and oderless if you are into saving the environment. Its great stuff and gives furniture a great new look.

I'm a reuse type of person, so I think painting or refinishing is a great idea. The quality of construction in a lot of furniture tends to be poorer today. If the pieces you have are sturdy and in a general style that you like, you'll probably be happy with renewing them.

I used the homemade version of chalk paint on my kitchen island cabs, and it's held up surprisingly well. It's my cooking station so slops happen.

As to the original question. China cabinets aren't out of style, but a lot of people don't use them anymore. I have a dish fetish, so I like to display them AND use them. If I had room for a cabinet I'd own one. I do own a buffet that used to be my grandparent's and I prefer the usefulness of the surface in my very small dining room. Luckily, I have a run of glass front uppers in my kitchen that holds my pretty stuff.
