 Someone please shed some light as to when and where you wear formal and semi-formal on the cruise. When I booked I was told to bring a dinner jacket and tie was optional. The rest of the meals may be shorts. My wife and I will be traveling on the Magic Eastern Caribbean Cruise March 22, 2003.

Actually, you won't be wearing shorts to dinner...

The formal night is the Captain's Gala and it will depend on your rotation as to which restaurant you'll be in, but it's one of your nights at sea...and you'll probably feel out of place if you don't at least have a dark suit.

The Master Chefs night is semi formal, but you'll want to think business casual, cotton pants, shirt and tie or nice polo.

Most of the nights, you'll be in proper attire with a nice shirt, cotton pants or slacks, and oxfords or nice casual dress shoes.

Here is what DCL says about Dinner attire for a 7 day cruise.

Shipboard evening attire for the Animator's Palate and Parrot Cay dining rooms is casual. Button-down, open-collar shirts or polo shirts and slacks are recommended for men. Pants and a blouse or a casual dress are appropriate for ladies. For Lumière's and Triton's restaurants and our adults-only alternative dinner restaurant, Palo, it is suggested that men wear jackets and ladies wear dresses or pantsuits. We kindly request that no shorts, T-shirts, or jeans be worn in any of our restaurants in the evening.

Aboard the 7-Night Caribbean Cruise there are two evening dinners that require more formal, or "black-tie-optional", attire. Tuxedo rentals are available in advance for these special dinners.

For those Guests sailing on our 7-Night Cruise, we will celebrate the spirit of The Islands with a special deck party. You are invited to join in the fun by wearing festive island wear including colorful shirts, dresses, shorts, or pants.

Your travel agent obviously doesn't have a clue if they are telling you that you can wear shorts to dinner. It's right in the literature put out by DCL that shorts and jeans are not allowed in the dining room. It would make me wonder what other inaccuracies your TA has passed on...
