I can't believe we leave in less than 2 weeks and I haven't reserved a rental car.

Are there any great last minute deals or tips you guys can give me. We are off site this time I'm gonna miss magical express.

Last-minute rental cars are the cheapest so you're in luck.

Try the "Car Rentals in May" thread here for some great codes. If you register as an Alamo Insider (it's free) you can get some fantastic deals and you can go straight to the kiosk at the airport- no waiting in line. I've got a full-sized car for 9 days for a total of $121. Sadly, that doesn't include gas :sad2:

Mousesavers.com has links for discounts. Do a google search for "car rental discounts" and you'll come up with quite a few.

Car rental agenciees would rather rent their cars for a lot less than "normal" than not at all, so you should be ok getting a last-minute deal.

I usually have a reservation booked months in advance and then start looking at great deals online within the last few weeks. If I get a good one, I just cancel the old one.

Priceline is great for getting a last-minute deal.

Thank you for your replies. I am an emerals club member, but haven't used them in years. I hear Avis is pretty good. I have also used Dollar in the past.

Is there any company I should stay away from? Sorry for all the questions, but it's been a while since I have rented a car.

Lower prices for near-last-minute rentals can pop up any time just as for rentals way off in the future. Keep checking back. With just two weeks to go, check back at least once a day.

Do not just use a code you see somewhere. You must qualify for the code (such as bring the page of the Entertainment Book or page of the newspaper that advertised that code).

I highly recommend signing up for the Alamo Insider. I did it last week and scored a mid-size for 8 days and the price is $90! And I leave in 3 weeks. Use your Inside member id plus this code and coupon 7015820 ID code and $40 off coupon (AD4027JDO). I even think that rental prices will be lower starting this Wed. when they release the next "last minute rates". So if you book today check again on Wed. And keep checking as your trip date gets closer because you never know what may happen.

Like the OP said, I too signed up for Alamo Insider deals, and I got an even bigger discount today playing with the discounts ...I used ID # 7015820, which is a 20% off code on the insider page and also used the coupon code AD4027JDO, which is the $40 off a weekly rental and my rental came to $278.38! This is a great price considering I am renting a minivan for 10days and I return it the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend! Just booked this deal this morning so there are plenty out there ...just try mixing up the Id#'s and codes to get the best price!!! :cool1:

I had the same van rented through National using Emerald Club for $40 more, so I canceled that ressie this morning when I got the better price!!!

Best of luck to you ...

I always use National unless they are higher. I have gotten some great deals with their "last minute specials". Go to www.nationalcar.com and click on "Specials to Go". They will then list specials there.

The contract code for this is 6600435. Anyone can use it and right now it is for rentals up to May 10, but that will change tonight as they update the specials every Tuesday. You can try coupon codes to save some money as well, but they don't always work with the last minute specials. ND3166ZDQ is for $25 off a week from National's site, but you can find better coupons out there.

Good luck.

Some of the best deals can be found last minute! Out of curiousity, 5 days before our last trip, I looked up our travel dates and saved $60 on our rental, using the same company we already had a car booked with. I cancelled the original reservation and re-booked at the lower rate.

I do this all the time and almost always find a better deal as I get closer to my trip. I once re-booked with National a half hour before leaving for the airport. The rental was the next day!

The only time this doesn't work is when you are flying at peak times such as spring break. My last trip I booked the rental car 8 months in advance and that was the best deal I could find right up to travel day....
