Forgot the milk in the car, still good?

Well, you've probably already tossed it by now, but really, it's fine. I've left the milk out over night lots of times. Brand new bags of milk that I completely forgot to put away when I came home with groceries. I just did it this week as a matter of fact, the milk was probably out for about 10 hours. We've been drinking it all week and we are all fine. We've been fine everytime it's happened (I think I need to take better care putting away the groceries!)

Think about it. Back in the day when the milk man used to come delivering the milk they sometimes came at 4 or 5 am, and the milk might not get taken in until 7 or 8 when people got up.

I know everyone has said to throw it away. But just like FayeW I left the milk in the car lots of times. For some reason the cashiers do not want to put the milk in a bag anymore. They want you to just carry it. I think that is why it gets left. Most times it was in the winter I left it overnight and it was very cold but just the other day I left it for a few hous until I went to get some and it was not in the frig , then I knew it was in the car. It was still cold , so if it is still cold from being left in the car I would still use it but if it was warm no.

I was thinking the same thing...I've forgotten the milk in the car a few times and it was just fine.

Yoghurt, cottage cheese and sour cream are all versions of spoiled milk. Even if you drank sour milk (not that I'd ever want to do that ewwww) it won't hurt you or make you sick...well, the smell might lol...but it won't "poison" you.

I'd boil it for hot chocolate if I was really finicky...and then cool it for chocolate milk since it's summertime lol, but I'll bet it was fine.

Oh, I can't believe it, but I just realized I forgot to bring the milk in from the car after being at the grocery store this morning. It's been unrefrigerated for six hours. Should I throw it out, or is it still good do you think?
I'm no expert but just yesterday I left half gallon if 1℅ milk in my trunk for 24 hrs. My car stays outside. Average day temp 80 at night 67. Got it out ant and put in fridge till next day. Opened it sniffed and tasted it IT WAS FINE TASTED JUST LIKE GOOD MILK. NO PROBLEM. TRUST YOUR NOSE. AND TOUNGE.

I would probably throw it out. I know here it's well into the 90's but I don't know what your temp. is where you are but vehicles get so hot I wouldn't want to take the chance.

While I would throw it out, the reality is all you have done is reduce the shelf life. If put in the refrigerator, it would be fine to drink or cook with for several days, it just would not last to the use by date. This is especially true of non-fat milk. The more fat in milk, the longer it will last.
Remember, it kept just fine in the cow at 101.5 degrees, and the milk in that jug has been pasteurized and homogenized and sealed from the air and refrigerated. And yes, I Googled the normal body temperature of a cow. :)

I also would throw it out. $4 isn't worth my family getting sick so I wouldn't take any chances.

$4 a gallon!? I'd swear off milk at that price. You scared me. I pulled my grocery receipt from Sunday, a gallon of non-fat milk is $2,09 here.

You can blame people like DW. She tells the checker, "anything with a handle, don't bag". It really does seem like a waste of a plastic bag, even though she religiously recycles the bags. And now they have delayed the plastic bag ban here in California, so the stores have put off the switch to good old biodegradable, renewable paper bags.

I did the same thing last week, it was only 75 degrees in the garage overnite, I smelled it and it smelled fine since it was skim it probably wouldn't spoil as fast, but for $2.69 why risk it?

Hey newbie! Do you realize this thread is EIGHT YEARS old? I think the OP has resolved the issue by now. What an odd thread to revive.

I would toss it out. The other day we bought some refrigerated salad dressing that you buy that is cold. My husband accidentally left it out on the counter for hours. I wanted to toss it. He said HE WILL EAT IT. So he marked an x on it and the rest of us WON'T TOUCH IT.

That price doesn't surprise me. A gallon of store-brand milk, any fat level, here is $3.50. A half gallon is $2.59. We don't pay sales tax on food items at a grocery store (or clothing for that matter) but some states charge tax on everything. It could easily reach $4.

No sales tax on food in California. The name brand milk could be $3.99 now, but never understood why folks buy name brand milk. Milk is milk, and at some of the stores, if you look at the plant code, it is the same for the store brand and the name brand. I will have to look at the price difference based on fat level. I seem to recall that it was about 25 cents a gallon more per step up in butter fat content (going non-fat to 1%....1% to 2% and 2% to whole)

We also get store brand but they do sell "premium" brands, organic, etc. I only mentioned it because if we're going to compare, might as well be comparing similar items.

4 hours in a hot car - toss it.

4 hours on the kitchen counter - might be okay.

But I will eat left over pizza that has been on the kitchen counter all night.

Edit: Didn't even notice that this thread was 8 years old.

Okay, I took notes grocery shopping today. Prices have jumped up. Current milk prices:

"Low Price First" Brand Milk per gallon:
Non-fat $2.45
1% and 2 % butter fat $2.60
Whole $2.75

"Great Value" store brand milk per gallon
$3.05 for all butter fat levels

"Crystal" a name brand milk (this is a region premium brand bottled by Foster Farms)
$3.98 for all butter fat level.s

One of the things I find super interesting about the Dis is that it gets people from all parts of the country talking directly to each other and learning about each other's daily lives. In my neighborhood a gallon of milk is well over $4. I've seen half gallons (regular, non organic) for $3.99. There's not much I can do about that, except move to a different neighborhood!!!

Yeah, I hear that it has been as high at $8.99 a gallon in Hawaii.

2 liter bottles of soda are another interesting price comparison across the country. They are pretty much $1.49 for Coke or Pepsi here, and 89 cents for store brands. But my wife's nephew managers a grocery store in south east Texas, and Coke and Pepsi are 89 cents for a 2 liter bottle there, and store brand is 49 cents.....and a 3 liter bottle of Coke or Pepsi is $1.29. My wife's nephew says Coke and Pepsi tried to get prices above $1 but every time they did, sales plunged. People there just a price point for soda.
