Emu Killed Crossing Busy Jersey Road

Apr 15, 2003 6:34 am US/Eastern

(1010 WINS) ROXBURY, N.J. An emu was killed when it tried to cross a busy Morris County highway and ran into a trailer.
The trailer was being pulled by a sport utility vehicle, which sped off after the flightless bird was hit on Route 80 in Roxbury Township. Authorities said they were hoping to identify the driver, but it was not clear whether the motorist would face any charges.

The SUV was eastbound when it hit the emu, which was standing in the center median area before it went onto the highway around 6:15 p.m. Sunday, state police said.

Emus, which are native to Australia, can grow to be as much as six feet tall and 135 pounds, but details about the bird that was killed were not immediately available.

PS – I am very ashamed that this happened in my home state. (people from NJ please don’t flame me, I’m no Dixie Chick)

2 perfectly good emu legs gone to waste on a New Jersey highway. What a shame!

I live right near where this tragic event happened!! Yes, this area of New Jersey has such a problem with emu overpopulation!! We have emu's everywhere - they are always grazing in our yards, darting in front of traffic, eating our flowers and shrubs, etc. Such a shame one got hit by a truck, but with so many around, I guess it was bound to happen! :teeth:

Ok, I am kidding here ...... really ......! :)

The poor driver probably thought he was hallucinating and sped off in terror and fear and swore to his wife that he would never, ever take another swig of booze in his life and quit cheating at poker!!!:teeth:

"Ethel, wake up I just hit a giant bird with huge feet."

"That's nice, dear. Have you seen a rest area with a Krispy Kremes kiosk?"

;)

Indyman…don’t worry I’m sure the “bird” will turn up on one of the NJ State Troopers Easter dinner tables. (or the "turkey leg" cart in WDW) Especially after reading this line: …”but details about the bird that was killed were not immediately available.” (yeah right!)

Hugs…wow… did you ever see any Walt Disney World 18 wheelers on the roads by those emu farms? I bet Pollyanna would be interested in your answer.

lol

Hey ……

Doesn’t Willy have a truck with a trailer in his painting convoy?

Where is he… I haven’t seen a post from him in a while.

Didn’t he say he might be heading to Jersey soon?

This gets stranger by the minute.

Ahhhhh, the legend of the EMU lives on . . . (and on, and on, and on . . .)

Yes Deb we must all remember emu and corn here on the DIS.

We should all try and create an emu or corn post every once in a while.

As the famous Jesse Jackson once said in a 1988 Presidential Campaign speech: “Keep Corn Alive! …Say it with me …Keep Corn Alive!”

PS – I’m talking about corn posts as in the vegetable ..not corn(y) posts as in one of Dan’s posts.;)

Ok sorry but I just dont get it, comparing Osma Bin Laden to a guy that hits a bird, I love animals just like everyone else but I dont think it will get the guy to the top of americas most wanted.
