Hi,

Am looking at renting a car from Dollar for 2 weeks in the summer for 2 adults/2 teenagers.
Has anyone one got any experiance of either of these cars, or even better has anyone drove both types who could give a comparison
Thanks...

We rented a Ford Escape and we could not wait for that driving experience to end... We owned a Jeep Cherokee and loved it!

The Cherokee seems more stable and has more leg room. The Escape could only be described as a tin can. (This is odd to admit as we are pretty much a Ford family)

Cherokee is the winner! :) Have a great trip!

also, keep in mind that the website might say Ford Escape or similar. There are no guarantees that you are getting exactly what is stated on the website. I rented a Mid-size SUV from National and was able to choose from Chevy, Saturn, Toyota, and Hyundai......

An opposite opinion for you. I love my Escape. I drove a Cherokee, as a loaner, and hated it. There is no comparison really. The Cherokee is much bigger, and really rides like a truck.
The Escape is smaller, and handles more easily...at least that's my opinion. No way would I consider it a 'tin can'.

I have to agree. The Ford Escape is also the 2nd best selling SUV of last year - number 1 was the Honda CR-V. Cherokee didn't even make the list.

I transport DH, myself and at times up to 3 - 13 yo boys along with their hockey bags in my Ford Escape and everyone fits fine.

:guilty: Sorry about the "tin can" comment. I didn't mean to offend anyone. It came from the door on the passengers side in the back popping back open every other time we tried to close it. We had rented from Dollar and they didn't want to help us out either. I love a big ole truck... Again sorry for the comment.

The Escape...definitly hands down!! More space for a start and a great car to drive...you will love it. No need for a tin can opener...lol..that comment made me laugh.

We rented from Alamo recently and had hoped for a Ford Escape. They gave us a Jeep Patriot and we had a terrible time getting all the luggage in. We r 2 aduts & 2 teenagers - my kids had to ride all over California with a suitcase between them!! As PP said you may not always get the car you are hoping for.

Just a FYI, a Ford Escape is classified as a mid size SUV a Jeep Cherokee is considered a Standard SUV. The mid size SUV in the Jeep line is the Patriot.

Yep, I would have said an Escape is about the same as a Patriot.
I guess it depends on what you're bringing. We're headed down next month..with another couple. So, 4 adults. We'll have 4 carryon bags, and 2 (possibly 3) checked bags. I don't forsee any issues getting that into the back of an Escape...which is what we have reserved.

Not sure where you reserved your vehicle, but, I know of NO rental agency that reserves a certain make or model. You can always ask, but, I don't want you to be unhappy if you don't get an Escape.

Through Budget at Sanford. Yes, I realize it may not be an Escape. My point was that I was happy with the possibility of getting an Escape since I've owned one and understand how luggage will fit in. If I get a similar vehicle, it will be...well...similar and I should have pretty much the same space.
As long as there is a small SUV waiting for me, it isn't all smokey or smelly, I'm going to be fine.

When I bought my Jeep Patriot I also looked at the Ford Escapes and I thought the Patriot had more room and a smoother ride.

I'm guessing that they are referring to a Jeep Grand Cherokee as the Cherokee hasn't been manufactured since 2001. The Grand Cherokee is quite a bit larger than the Escape, a Grand Cherokee would be better compared to a Ford Explorer.

Given the choice between an Escape and a Cherokee, for the same cost, I would pick the Cherokee.
