For you smokers out there......

Hello fellow members....

My wife and I were booked for 2 nights in BCV, checking in on Sunday at about 5 in the afternoon....my only request for the room was non-smoking....when we checked in they told me they only had a smoking optional room and try the room....and they could change us the next day...so we went the the room....#440...and it stunk from smoke....so I called back and explained to them that that room would not work.....so I told them that all I wanted was another room for the night...put us up in the regular hotel if necessary, but we could not stay in that room. They told us to hang on and a manager would call us.....45 minutes later and no call I went back to the lobby and kind of forced the issue....amazingly they found us another room...#128(and very nice by the way).....but they did mention to me that since we were staying on points they could not put us up in the regular hotel....bottom line is we kind of ran around for a couple of hours for something that should have been available when we checked in....had a nice time but in my humble opinion 98% of the rooms should be non-smoking....

It was noted a while back just how few smoking rooms that there actually are at the resorts. I was shocked at how few. Don't think it's 98%, but it seems like it was about 90%. Sorry you got a smoking optional room--I know how difficult that can be. All three of us have problems with smoking rooms, and two of us are asthmatic so I can really understand.

The last 3 rooms we got at Disney were NS and all had been smoked in by the previous guest. I think if you reduce the smoking rooms this will only get worse. Unless Disney also fines anyone that smokes in a NS room.

We just got back from the BW 2 bdrm. I do everything short of stomp my feet to get a SMOKING room. It never happens!!!! I'm not comfortable smoking out in the balcony in a non smoking area let alone having the smoke on my clothing and sitting on the couch. I specifically asked when we checked in ( I don't think she understood english) and was told yes it was smoking only to go to the 2 bdrm and find out BOTH were non smoking!! We smoke on the balcony anyways but still then I come on the boards and hear about the poor people w/ problems who end up with the smoking rooms. I feel for you guys and I'm sorry.

Our last trip to OKW in Nov/Dec. we had ask for non-smoking and got it. When we got to the room, it had been smoked in and were moved. I complained about it but I could have gotten a more postive response talking to a wall than the manager at OKW. The balcony is not an option for me as I have had smoke filter up to ours from below or besides us and its just as bad. The manager did say that the odor could have come from the balcony but was pulled back into the room..smjj

I agree, Disney should be more considerate to their non-smoking guests. As a non-smoker, I hate when we get a room that's clearly been smoked in. I can't sleep because the pillows retain the odor, and I can smell the smoke on my clothing. Very frustrating.

My first visit 'home' was at the BWV-I'd req. a nonsmoking room for medical reasons and that's what I got. Not only had it been smoked in, it had food in the fridge and batroom never cleaned! They cleaned it and even though the smell wasn't bad the first day, as our days there went on, the 'deodorizer' started wearing off and reaked of smoke by the time we were gone. Got sick, missed 2 days of work after getting home. Next trip 'home' just prior to arrivng at the BCV, called membership svs. and reiterated my medical no smoking and what happened at my first visit and do not expect this to happen again. It didn't! It's too bad that we have to do this. I feel it's because we arrive later than most (flight gets in at 5) and I'm not about to come a day early just to get in line and get that room before the stated check in time.
By the way, sold my BWV points, I was so upset with the way the folks handled the situation.........like they care anyway.

Well, we finally took the plunge! After years of saying "should we do it?" and "can we really afford this?", we figured we'd go for it!

We bought a resale from the Timeshare store (very easy experience) and we couldn't be more excited.

Here's my first (of many, many) questions: Our use year is June, and at that time we'll receive our points. My DH wants to stay in a studio in the beginning of December, but obviously I'm not in a position to do anything for another 5 months.

Can I call Disney and simply book a studio at BCV, then when I get my points, switch the reservation over?

Once DVC has your membership in their system (it can take a few weeks after your contract closes), you can call to book your Dcember ressie, even though your points don't become available until June, they don't HAVE to be available when you make the ressie...but they must be available for the time period of your stay.

Not if you put the bite on those that smoke in a NS room. I'd say $250 first offense and don't take the charge off if one complains.

The problem I see with that...lets say that the person before me smoked in the room. My sense of smell isn't very acute so I don't notice it. Then the person to occupy the room after me is extremely sensitive and can smell the faintest wisp. They report that the room had been smoked in, and DVC back charges my credit card. Are we going to hire a crew of inspectors/supervisors to inspect each room at a significant increase to our dues?

I'm also a smoker and always request a smoking room, but never get one. I have, on more than one occasion, asked about the possibility of changing to a smoking room and was told to go ahead and smoke in the room that I was assigned. Housekeeping will even bring an ashtray to a NS room!

Now, before anyone flames me, I WILL NOT smoke in a non-smoking room, I go on the balcony, but as I've said in another thread on the resorts board, you can't always blame the room occupants when the CM's are telling people that it's ok to smoke.

That will probably happen within a few years, at least in states like Florida and California. A decade ago, that would have seemed impossible. Now I think that it's just a matter of time until states start imposing bans on all indoor smoking outside of private homes and apartments.

Starwood's Westin Hotels segment already banned smoking in all of their US, Canadian and Caribbean properties. 92% of guests requested nonsmoking rooms anyway. Westin will pick up new business. And, of course, smokers are still welcome to stay at Westin, but they won't be able to smoke in their rooms.

Some timeshares are 100% nonsmoking, such as the Hyatt Wild Oak Ranch. On Disney's cruise ships, the staterooms are 100% nonsmoking (while on all other large-ship cruise lines, the staterooms are 100% smoking). And Disney's Grand Californian in Anaheim is 100% smoke-free.

Having said that, I don't think that DVC will lead the way before there is legislation, at least for existing properties.

But, again, it's just a matter of time.

Me too. I wonder how that happens?? So many people want non-smoking that you would think getting smoking rooms would be easy, but for some reason it isn't.
Before you all flame me, I don't smoke in non-smoking rooms, or outside of the designated smoking areas in the parks.

That would be great, but it would affect DVC - you'd need to include timeshares.

It happens because the hotels are run so tightly to capacity and with people checking in and out on different schedules.. The only way to keep non-smokers from getting smoking rooms is to get rid of the smoking rooms. And the only way to keep the non-smoking rooms from getting smoked in is to fine. And the way to fine the right person is to put detectors in the room to measure - won't be cheap.
