She had asked about the material around my pool so I grabbed some pictures. The material is stamped and colored concrete, what I especially like, aside from the fact that it doesn't look like a giant helicopter pad is the way they did the edge of the pool, cantelievering the concrete over so there is no coping or anything, the vinyl liner goes into a crease just below the concrete.

Wow! Great shots of the detail of the pool area. Thanks for posting them for me. I've heard of colored concrete but never stamped concrete. I imagine that it means that those are just lines drawn into it to make it look like different blocks of concrete. But just look at the texture of it too! I really really like that!

Oh, I gotta win become a MegaMillionWoman! So much I want, so little money.....

They pour it like regular concrete then they take big rubber stamps and literally pound them into the concrete.. they then spread concrete dye on top in a couple of colors to give it the stone look. They still have to put in expansion joints and I have seen it done where the joints don't follow the indentations, I don't think it looks near as good. These guys came back and cut them along the natural joint lines.

It looks great Alex! My DH liked it, and he knows concrete...lol!

With blazing hot temps predicted here for the next few days, that pool looks very inviting.............. !!

Alex it looks beautiful. I think the designer concrete gives the pool lots of character.

It not your plain old boring concrete anymore, it's concrete with pizazz.

Glad that they did the job in the way that is most attractive. But, why are expansion joints put in later? Isn't that something that needs to be done at the time of pouring of concrete?

Hoping my question isn't dumb.

because if they did it that way, they would have to put them in straight across, I have seen it done that way and it really takes away from the look. In other words the expansion joints would cut straight across the apron and across the face of some of the "stones".
What they do is come back and cut them with a diamond blade in a right angle grinder.. much better look and works as well. 2 years and we have one small crack which isn't bad for a pad that size.

Oh now I understand. Thanks for explaining that to me. It really is a beautiful decking and pool. I wish you and your family many happy, relaxing and cool hours of enjoyment with it.

(Note to self: When I win MegaMillions, make sure they come back to cut with diamond blade the expansion joints!)

LOL Tulirose, the majority of concrete cutting blades are made with diamonds, but they are industrial diamonds. Here in Canada an average blade would cost about $200.00, and should last at least two years. When they wear out, they can have the blade edge rebuilt by having new cutting diamonds embedded on them.

......I had some help with this reply....LOL! :smooth:
