We have stayed offsite but then think why pay 89 or more in a less safe room when you can stay in disney for 20 less and be there. Usually we make our plans and then I add a day in advance because I can't wait. This year I added 2 days!!!

It takes us 24 to 26 hours to drive from CT (We're pokey and like the 84-81-7-26-95 route). When we are staying DVC we always stay off property if it's a Saturday night. And one time when we were headed to FW we stayed at Gaylord Palms via Priceline, and we upgraded to a suite! Although we're both in our 50's we seem to thrive on the straight thru drive. We switch every 3-4 hours and also love the travel to WDW. Next 3 trips we're flying though. Good rates on SWA and Allegiant.

This past July we stayed offsite for the 1st night because there weren't any rooms available at WDW for that night with a discount (they had very little even at rack rates) and we were not going to arrive until after midnight and did not want to spend a lot of money for only a couple of hours. We didn't arrive in Orlando until after 2AM. We stayed about 2 miles away from the WDW entrance and it wasn't bad. I think it was a Hampton Inn. Normally we would try and stay at a Value the 1st night if it is going to be late when we arrive and switch the next morning.
