For those with kids(who arent babies)and dont do the whole trick or treating/Halloween thing, why dont you?? Just curious thats all.:confused3

Frankly, I find it obnoxious and annoying. My mother never cared for it either-my grandmother compared it to begging. I love a good ghost story as much as the next person, but I think that people get way to carried away with Halloween. I just go out and buy a bunch of candy for my kids and keep the outside lights off. Just my makeup I guess. Husband is the same way!!

My neighborhood doesn't do much either so it pretty much fits. I have never been a big Halloween person and was shocked at how serious Georgia took it when I moved here. :confused3

When my son was younger we'd go to harvest festivals but I never got into the door to door thing. Just never did. :confused3

I love it, but if I was not into it, I would probably go to the movies or something. The main thing is to have your porch lights off so the trick or treaters know not to come to the door. If I was home with little ones, maybe I would bake some brownies or rice Krispie treats...or just go about it as any other evening.

Our family doesn't celebrate Halloween for personal religious reasons, due to it's Pagan origins. You can google for lots of information on the origins of Halloween. Of course a lot of people see it is a fun day for the kids to get to dress up and get candy. We don't see it that way. :flower3:

We don't celebrate Halloween for religious reasons, too. We usually just keep the porch lights out, plan a movie night (DH and I bought a few DVDs this afternoon), and settle in the family room for the evening. :)

The ones that I know for sure that don't--don't do so b/c of their particular beliefs. But then they do "trunk or treat' which is trick or treating tailgate style. I get why they don't "celebrate' the holiday--but they are still "celebrating" the holiday.:confused3 They'll just do it on a different day.

From the parade of costumes that have graced my door step, I see it more as a costume display that deserves some candy. I have had a huge "bear in the blue book", "Jesus", Dorothy, right down to the red shoes, indians, a 'boy' who is really a girl, a nurse, Thomas the Tank, a couple of dinosaurs, army guys, and only one 'ghoul". I think its fun and it teaches young children to be able to be pleasant to strangers and say thank you.

I can't speak for everyone (obviously), but my mom never let us dress up as anything "spirit" related - goblin, ghost, witch, vampire, etc, as well as things that were "gross" like the costumes you see with the blood on them.

I think with trunk or treats and/or church "Harvest Festivals", the children still get to participate in the fun, innocent part of the holiday without the haunted and gory stuff. It's a "cleaned up" version.

Another reason may be safety issues; a lot of people don't want to trick or treat door to door. Trick or treating at a church or community center is a more controlled environment. It's also climate controlled if the trick-or-treating happens at carnival booths indoors. :thumbsup2

I have many friends with kids that do not celebrate Halloween at all .. for religious reasons...

We have lots of friends who don't for religious reasons and the origins of the holiday. However, our take is that we don't celebrate the scary or spirit part. We are careful in our choices of costumes and decorations and celebrate the fall part of it.

I was just wondering if your family decorates a Christmas tree for Christmas?

I mean no disrespect :flower3:

Halloween is to Samhain as Christmas is to Winter Solstice as Easter is to Oestre or Beltane. :ssst:

Anyway, I'm off topic.

I stopped handing out candy b/c I got tired of all the kids that aren't from my town who get bussed in to trick or treat and who are in high school.

LOL, well, as a Pagan, I can say much of the Pagan origins of Halloween have been grossly exaggerated, but whether it was Pagans or those with moral objections to Paganism that did the most exaggerating, I couldn't say! But you know, they say it on the internet...

Anyway, we "do" Halloween, but not really the trick or treating or commercial activities. We like to attend Harvest pageants and festivals, go apple picking, and of course get together with like-minded people. We have a big fancy holiday meal and wear homespun costumes all day. We make a point to support whatever community activities there are for the holiday, and we do go show off the costumes to friends in the neighborhood, skipping over the houses we're not close to.

We "do" the traditional ToT for Halloween, but many of the folks I go to church with it don't, and do a trunk or treat instead. Mainly b/c of the Pagan roots of the Holiday. But around here...there are no 'scary' houses, just a bunch of cute kids in costumes getting candy...and that is how I feel. I know many Southern Baptists are like my church and discourage ToTing...so I guess that makes me a rebel :lmao:

We don't celebrate Halloween because we don't believe it glorifies God but I do enjoy seeing the kids all dressed up. Tonight we took Christian to the mall dressed in camo pants & orange Tshirt with olive green face paint. He didn't really "get" trick or treat, so our nurse just walked him up and down for a couple hours. It has been raining here all day, so it was good execise for him.

When my kids were little we used to attend a Harvest Festival at church. Most of our friends don't celebrate Halloween either, but the Festival gave kids a chance to dress up and play games. Nobody dressed their kids as ghouls and there were no black & orange decorations. Just good clean fun with a side of candy.

my 12 year old did not go out (he is too cool this year LOL)...we had a great time giving out candy. We all put on our Kiss masks (we have all 4 guys) and had a great time!

We do go trick or treating and we do pass out candy, but I have to admit, that I basically feel the same way. Halloween is by far my least favorite holiday and I really don't like the whole trick or treating thing at all. I only do it now because I have kids, and I remember how much I liked it when I was a kid, but I agree it's pretty annoying.

I was wondering about that to. There are 2 churches near our house that do Trunk of Treats. The kids play games and get candy.
My sister takes her DS to the mall near her house to trick or treat. He's only 3 so he likes it. She said some stores had games this year too.

But what about the kids who don't do anything when the teacher gives them a homework sheet where they had to seperate candy into the seperate types and write down how much of each type and then add it all up to get a total. DD10 got that as her homework this weekend.

I guess those kids make something up or just write that they don't trick or treat.

You know, I feel the same way. Annoyed. The thing that bothers me is the 6 week buildup where we are treated to skulls, ghoulish creatures, naughty costumes, etc. Halloween isn't uplifting, it doesn't celebrate the gathering of family, it doesn't help anyone else. It's a purely selfish day with no redeeming value.

My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving because there are no presents, it's all about being grateful for our blessings, and gathering with our families, whoever that may be.:thumbsup2
