Altho I feel I have strong knowledge on US adoption procedures... I was wondering about International adoption requirements. I think I know the answers to the questions below but if you can help me out I sure would appreciate it!

We are NOT applying for adoption but know someone who is doing so. Currently looking into Russian adoption of older child.. around 10 or so....

Will an Int. agency allow a single person adopt?
Will an Int. agency allow a woman over 50 adopt?
Will an Int. agency allow a woman who is currently rec'ing psychiatric treatment adopt? (depression due to divorce, I think)

Thank you so much!

Joan

I'm not an expert by any means about International Adoption but our good friends adopted 2 little girls from China & I will answer what I know from that experience:

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Not too sure on this. I rather doubt it though.

Good luck to your friend.

I have some friends that have been trying to adopt from Russia for the past year. So far no luck. Problem with Visia for the kids to come visit or what they call "camp". It's been a rollercoaster ride for them.

There are different rules for each country...depending on where you want to adopt from.....some let singles adopt..some dont. I have a brochure from an agency that tells the criteria for each country but my daughter is sleeping where it is so I can't get it now but if you want to know about a certain place I can look it up later. I was looking at one place where you don't ev en have to go there, they bring the child to you but it is one of the places where singles can't adopt from so that was out for me.....

I know that China will let single women adopt.......I'm pretty sure that being over 50 is ok too.........I'm not sure about the last question though.
Korea is one place that you don't have to travel to......they have people escort the child on the plane to you.
My SIL & BIL adopted 2 beautiful litttle girls...one from China & one from Korea.

We adopted our DD from China. So I don't have a lot of knowledge with other countries and the policies vary tremendously. With older children most countries will relax some of their policies.

Most countries do allow single women to adopt (some also allow men). China has a quota on the number of singles each year. China does allow people over 50 to adopt. There policy is the mother cannot be X number of years older than the child. So a single 50+ mother could adopt a baby but could probably adopt a young child. I know China would have an issue with the psychiatric treatment. This just isn't something their culture is comfortable with.

Someone brought up camps run by Russian orphanages that bring children here for the summer. Maybe your friend could look into that and sponsor a child that she could maybe later adopt.

Also since she's looking at an older child has she considered a domestic adoption? It certainly would be a quicker and easier process.

I would suggest your friend contact a reputable agency (there are many that are not) and possibly go to an information session. We used Holt International (www.holtintl.org) and they have a program in Russian as well as several Asian and South American countries. Another agency I know of is Spence Chapin (www.spence-chapin.org).

Good luck to your friend:D

A person I know was in her mid-late 40's, and got a beautiful older child (8 years old) from India.

Some agencies, countries I've been told have issue with psychiatric treatment.
