We just got a house that has an in ground pool. It also has a slide, diving board and a Jacuzzi. We are going over our insurance policies making sure we have the best coverage. Our agent is recommending an umbrella policy. Just wondering, if you have a pool, how do you best insure/cover it? Is an umbrella policy necessary?

I don't have a pool and I have an umbrella policy. All the financial and estate planners recommend that everyone have an umbrella policy. They aren't expensive, and these days it isn't unheard of for a claim against your home owners or auto policy to exceed the upper limits of the policy.

We don't have a pool either and have had an umbrella policy for years. I recommend you get one.

I don't have a pool but I have farm property separate from my home. My ins company suggested a rider which costs $37 a year in case someone gets hurt on that property

No pool, but another umbrella policy holder here. We've had the policy for years.

An umbrella policy is a good thing to have (at least in my opinion) even if you don't have a pool. The umbrella policy is an extra policy that adds coverage to all your other policies (homeowners and auto) so that your coverage amounts are higher. My umbrella policy increases my coverages to a million dollars and costs me just under $200 a year.

No pool and we also have an umbrella policy. Our CFP recommended it and it's pretty inexpensive. Also, don't ever tell anyone how much coverage you have because in the case you ever need to use it, you don't want the other party knowing how much you're covered for. The feeling is, someone will go after your max amount knowing you can pay it.

It takes your attorney 2 seconds to make the phone call and find out. Not saying you should be bragging about it, but it really isn't a hard thing to learn.

Umbrellla is a great product that covers so much from being sued after slapping someone in Walmart... or being sued for your child bullying a school mate. :) Sounds like extreme examples, but they happen.

When we first met with our insurance agent 5 years ago after buying our home, she recommended one to us and we do not have a pool.

Not exactly. That is private information between you and your insurance company. No one can just call and ask, not even an attorney. We have been told by the insurance company, our CFP and lawyers not to talk about it.

In-ground pool and In-ground hot tub, have always had an umbrella policy. MIL was an insurance broker and recommended that we increase our coverage for a few days when we have a party. Our agent didn't want to do it but did when I insisted.

Before we moved in to our house with a pool I had a removeable fence installed and added an umbrella policy. Both of those measures give me a huge amount of peace of mind.

If you have assets, it's a good idea to have an umbrella liability policy. I just carry a 1 million dollar one. // We do not have a pool or trampoline or anything like that, but do carry one of these.

Also, have an umbrella policy and used it for an auto accident with an underinsured motorist. Slammed my knees into the dashboard and had to have them replaced. Umbrella policy helped with the medical bills.

Just my personal experience. The attorney asked me if I knew their coverage limits, I said no, he said no problem we'll just find out and by the time we got home he had the numbers.
