For those who make costumes...

I have a few questions.

First, let me explain my cenerio.

I am a 17 year old who is attending MNSSHP this year with my family and best friend. A few years ago when I attended my first Halloween party, Kingdom Hearts had just been released and Sora, Goofy and Donald were at the party. I saw several guests dressed as some of the game characters aswell.

I am a huge fan of the Kingdom Hearts videogames, and this year, since it will most likely be my last for a long time, I wanted to try my hand at going as a character too.

I am very familiar with costumes and makeup and what-not, but I have no experience with wigs.

Does anyone know how to make and/or style them? Could you help me?
Also, the character I want to portray wields a weapon that I would like to make. Any tips on how to make that?

Thanks so much.

Depends on the wig that you buy. You can style any wig quite easily. I guess you would be buying a cheap wig so that will most probably be synthetic hair. Therefore you can't use hair straighteners or curling tongs.

Brush out the original style if there is one. If it is difficult to brush out, boil a kettle of water and pour over the wig. Two loads of the kettle will get the style out. It would be useful if you can get a wig block (wooden head shaped stand for the wig), but if this is the only time you're going to style a wig it then don't worry. If you do get a wig block, then cover it with clingfilm before putting the wig on as this protects it from the water and hair products used when styling.

I guess you could use someone else's head as a wig block when styling.

To dry the wig, don't use a hair dyer or straighteners or anything - this will damage the synthetic hair of the wig. If you have an airing cupboard (somewhere which is warm and humid, which could dry out the wig) use this.

You can set the style in while its wet using rollers, hair gel and lots of hairspray. If you want it straight, just comb it straight and hairspray it. It's as easy to style as human hair, as long as you remember you can't use any heat on it directly! :) You can use hair clips, hair slides, etc.

If you want any more specific advice don't hesitate to message me! :)

I would suggest big blocks of styrofoam for the staff. It should be easy enough to shape each part individually (an electric turkey carving knife works well for this). You can use a smaller knife for carving out the details in the middle of the staff.

After you get each of the parts made, use dowel rods whose ends have been coated in glue to attach them all together. You should be able to use spray paint to get it the colors you'd like.

Hopefully, using styrofoam, the end product will be light enough that you don't mind carrying it around all night :)

i agree with buying a standard wig and then adapting it to what you want. might be an idea to buy one thats slightly longer so you can cut back and work with it.

I'm really curious to see what kind of wig the OP wants and what they want it to look like.

jedibunny when you hit 10 posts you can post pics and send PM's.

As for the weapons, Disney does kind of frown upon anything that could potentially hurt someone so could you possibly go with something made of foam? I am not Kingdom Hearts savvy so a pic would be good to go by if you have one.

Yeah...well, thank you to all of you!

Photobucket is being dumb, but for those of you who play/know of the game, my character is Saix.
