For those who love to read I have a question?

My sister lent me her Kindle this summer and I just didn't enjoy it. It doesn't have the same feeling as a book and I can't lend the book. And what happens when the Kindle becomes older technology--will I then have to update all my "books" just like the whole record, 8 track, cassette tape, cd thing?

I did enjoy needling my sister with my endless concerns about it, though. :lmao:

Obviously we don't know what future technologies will exist, but a digital copy of a text can be easily reformatted for future ereaders. Once you own the book, it is stored on your personal library on Amazon and you can download it as many times as you are licensed for. MP3 players have certainly changed but you don't have to keep buying the same song over and over again on Itunes - books will be the same way.

I love reading and my favorite type of books are hardcover although I will purchase large print paperbacks occasionally.

Do you think I'd enjoy a Kindle?

TIA, Sincerely, Sadie

I know people love their Kindles. It is something I would never use, I'm a tactile person & just love books.

I love books but I LOVE my kindle. My DH didn't think I would like it because of the feel of a book but I actually like it more. Much easier to read plus I like the fact you can get "free" books too.

I love books & will always purchase the works of certain authors in book form. However, I think I'll probably purchase a kindle or nook next year. I love to read & I think I'd enjoy the convenience of an e reader for my daily transit commute as well as on vacation.

karen, this is really the best attitude to have about Kindles, or Nooks, or any ereader (including the Kindle app on my Iphone!) Of course having an ereader does not mean you have to give up purchasing and reading traditional paper books. And for some books, the pleasure is in the form - I know I wouldn't have enjoyed a book like Diane Setterfield's The Thirteenth Tale - which in large part was about the love of and joy of reading and books - nearly as much in an electronic format.

But for many other fiction titles, the Kindle version gave me a wonderful reading experience (because if the story is good you forget the format within the first five minutes) with the added bonus of having spent less money compared to the hardback price and having avoided the storage/giveaway/loan and remember to get back problems of acquiring hardback books.

Best of both worlds - a Kindle or other ereader AND some common sense about what you want to acquire in paper form!!

I am getting the new Nook for Christmas( hopefully!!) .. I like that you can lend books which you cant do with the kindle yet plus the books are cheaper at boarder than at amazon..

I love my kindle, I'm spending way too much on books lately though.

I've looked at the nook and it just didn't impress me much. Having to flip through all those jpgs at the bottom to browse my library would drive me nuts. Plus the prices at the Barnes and Noble ebook store are higher than Amazon.

The one thing my Kindle doesn't do well is work with our Public Library ebook download system. I'm considering adding a Sony reader for that.

tiggger1, the Nook is a Barnes & Noble product, not Borders. Double check the prices of B&N against Amazon for a better comparison.

I have a Sony Reader which I love and have had for two years.

It has simply changed my life - I always have something to read - in line to get kids, broken down at side of road, traveling, at the pool at Disney, in line waiting for Cubs tickets. Carry it everywhere.

Lightweight, portable and instant.

Holds a ton of books - if I was on a long business trip there is no way I would want to carry 5 hardcovers with me.

Plus I have saved a TON of money. Instead of a hardcover costing $27.95, I get new releases at $9.99.

This is one of the reasons that I am getting a an e-reader (Sony, too :)). I love that it will be portable enough to go anywhere with me, and I'll have something to read while I'm waiting. I also already have a ton of books, and with 4 other readers in the house, bookshelf space is hard to find. We all seem to have a hard time letting go of our books, and with my Sony I can keep my *books* stored on there, or on my computer :thumbsup2
Another reason I want it is because I do alot of reading in bed, but I am most comfortable on my side (I know TMI) and a book can be difficult to read that way. The Sony would be much easier to hold and read that way.

Have you ever listened to audio books.. I am addicted to them now. I go though a few a week. I cant find time to sit down and read so having books on my ipod is great. I have one on now. I can listen to them while I am doing household things and even in the car. I just discovered the library has them for free and I also belong to audible.com

I'm completely addicted. It started with the Harry Potter books and has just grown from there. A good audio book needs a good author AND a good reader - makes the "book" experience just that much better. :goodvibes

I'm almost done with The Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris - I love them!! :cool1:

Are you serious? If it's my stinkin book, I should be fully able to flip through it as I please.

I love to read but nothing about the Kindle appeals to me. I like my stacks of books, I like feeling the pages in my fingers. And now I will add that I like flipping back and forth at will.

:thumbsup2 ITA

I wanted to get one for DW as a gift, and she's not interested:confused3 One thing I can understand is if you drop a book on the floor, spill coffee on it, or leave it on a plane, it's not much of a loss. The Kindle on the other hand...

Im an electronic junky, my fiance tells me all the time DO NOT buy me a kindle or similar device. She loves to read, but wants the book and has no interest in a kindle.

Thanks everyone for your input.

For all of you who have posted that they love the actual feel, smell and being able to see their books on shelves, I agree 100%.

Those of you who have pointed out the benefits of owning a Kindle (or other ereader device) it gave me a lot to think about, especially being easier to carry around while traveling, in the car etc...

Some of you expressed the benefits of having both a Kindle and keeping their hardcover books. It seems as if you all have the best of both worlds and it works for you.

My DH has been after me for awhile to purchase a Kindle to help cut down on the amount of books in our home. I also carry a book in my purse just in case I am in line, at the doctors office or anyplace that I have a few minutes.

My DH bought me a kindle and it has taken me awhile to get used to it.

I'm one of those people who buys 100s of books a year - hard and paper. My house is full.

The transition has been hard as I have so many books stacked up to read that I needed them to release a new book I hadn't bought that I could move to the virtual top of the pile.

I have now read 2 books and 3 issues of a magazine subscription, here is my experience-

1. It's a little heavier than I expected but about the same as a hardback book.

2. Great for reading while eating or other things that require a free hand or two like feeding the baby. Since I read so much, I get hand cramps from holding books - not a problem

3. I love the adjustable font size. In different light you can adjust the size or if your eyes get tired.

4. Great for reading in bed especially with tri-focals because you can choose the best font size for comfortable book cuddling

5. I bought the cover and book light that seem to be the most popular, I love the cover but you have to remember to put the kindle to sleep before closing or it will press the "joy sticK". The book light was supposed to slip into a slit in the cover ... hmmm cover, no slit so I still haven't figured out a good way to attach the light. I have propped it in the cover and the light does very well- I can't wait to take it in the car at night, also to be able to read in bed in the middle of the night without disturbing DH.

6. There are still some authors that I will continue to buy in paper because they are authors that I love, I have all their books, etc. So far there hasn't been a book I've wanted that wasn't available for the kindle and I am saving money.

7. I love being able to get magazines on the kindle. I want to get the New Yorker but then I would never get any books read ...

8. I haven't been able to figure out how to apply an Amazon gift card to kindle purchases as they are handled as 1-click purchases.

9. I miss being able to see the covers, read the inside blurb - have an inkling of the plot before I start the book.

That's my experience so far. I picked up a hardback to start tonight after a week of only reading on the kindle, we'll see what it's like to go back to paper ...
