For those using a CF diet what alternative do you use?

We've never tried the casein free diet because DS has always been a huge dairy product fan. When all else fails, I can always count on him eating yogurt or drinking some milk. Read yet another interesting article today and might try to at least reduce the dairy.

If you use the CF diet what alternatives, if any, do you use to replace milk? Soy? Nut milk?

Thanks!

Lisa

We use "very vanilla" soymilk. It tastes like a milkshake. Our dd is not totally dairy free. I still use dairy in recipes, etc for the family. However, I greatly limit Zoe's intake.

My son drinks chocolate almond milk, and vanilla rice milk. Make sure the box says casein free though, because some rice milks do contain it.

My DD drinks Rice milk. For cheese there is a rice brand I use for making her pizza but for on a cheeseburger or for cheese in her scrambled eggs I just find something that is casein free. For yogurt she will eat Trader Joe soy yogurt but I have to admit that she doesn't eat as much yogurt now than she did before we went casein free. For ice cream, which she loves but doesn't get as often as she would like because of the cost, is either Soy ice cream, Rice Dream or I make homemade.

We do rice milk. But, we've tried to steer away from soy, and DS is also allergic to nuts. So rice is about it. It doesn't taste much like milk, I personally thought the soy was much tastier.

We use the VeganRella cheeses. They do melt up, so they're good for pizza or nachos.

:goodvibes Thanks everyone!

I tried to pass some soy off this morning (just a sip) and it was a no go. I'll keep trying though. Maybe I can sneak it in his cereal.

I had the same problem until we landed on rice milk. To me it's like watered down skim milk. Now DH uses it too.

Was your no go like mine. Spit it on the floor, thew the sippy cup and asked for Chocolate milk. Which is what she lived on back then . :rotfl:

When DS went CF, I found that he had to have no substitutes for about two months. So he drank juice, did not eat cereal or quesadillas, and had hamburgers rather than cheeseburgers. When the two months were up, I introduced the CF "cheese", soygurt, and soymilk - no problems at all now.

1stluvispooh, I was lucky :cool1: DS just looked at me and clearly stated, "Mom, this is NOT milk." I told him sure it was. He respectfully replied, "I don't think so, may I please see the container?" and then refused to drink any more.

renchick, I may have to try that. :thumbsup2

Your DS sounds like mine especially the "may I please see the container?" part :rotfl:

As far as the soy goes, nobody here would drink the "plain". I would keep some in the fridge for cooking, but drinking it plain is nasty.

The vanilla was okay to drink, but it didn't taste like milk at all. If you knew it was soy and were okay with that, it didn't taste bad. But no way you could fool a kid with it.

The chocolate was tons better. It's very overly-chocolate flavored, so you don't notice that it isn't real mik. ;)

The rice milk DS won't just drink it, I use it in cooking. He just kinda quit drinking milk altogether.

I don't think the VeganRella cheese in any way tastes like real cheese. It just tastes like flavorless goop. But it works for what it needs to be.
