DH was deployed for our 1st anniversary, so our tradition started with #2.
We don't buy gifts. We go out for what we call an "dining experience." It started off as a meal would could only afford once a year (or quite frankly couldn't even afford it then...)
We've dined on the beach with a waiter trudging through the sand to serve us, on a train, in a swanky steak house with a separate dessert room, a in an open-hearth 1600's house, at the top of a mountain overlooking 7 glaciers, and in more 'normal' locations that we simply could only afford if we were going to splurge. It is also interesting what our idea of a 'splurge' is now compared to our 2nd anniversary!
After 13 years, I know I would not be able to tell you what 'things' we would have gotten for eachother all those years, but I can tell you where all of our dinners have been.
Our 18th anniversary (5 years from now) will be at the Chef's Table at Victoria & Alberts. It will also be my 40th birthday, so I told DH he has 5 years to figure out how to make it happen. (yeah, got married on my birthday, see deployment reference above)
