We just got back from a week at an all-inclusive DREAM vacation. We went to Cabo. I wanted to help ease some people's fears of going, because this is not an area that is crime filled, nor is it at all worry-some to travel there.

We flew into the airport and avoided the sales people INSIDE of the airport. They are always there, have been there for YEARS and can be a bit of an annoyance, but avoid them and walk OUT the doors for shuttles and car rentals. We got outside and our shuttle was waiting for us. Took it to our resort- NO PROBLEMS at all. Didn't see 1 thing that made us worry or get nervous.

Got to our all-inclusive and it was the DREAM vacation! The girls, my husband and I were waited on hand and foot, 100% of the staff spoke english, they were super friendly and the resort was very safe and we didn't worry at ALL! The resort was only 40% booked, it was their 'slow season' they said.

Our resort had free shuttle service to and from Cabo three times daily, we took it into town twice. We shopped, went on two boat tours and interacted with the locals. NOT ONCE did we feel unsafe. NOT ONCE did we see something that was bad. We saw an area FULL of people, families and workers who WORKED HARD at making you happy with a visit to their restaurant or buisness. There were families from all over there- My family had an AMAZING glass bottom boat trip- a 1 1/2 hour ride to the Cabo arch, visit to the sea lion colonies and a beautiful snorkling experiance that was OUT OF THIS WORLD amazing. We were able to be there to watch the 'jumping fish'/manna rays that jump up and out of the water- attempting to "fly like a bird" and 10-20 of them in a group and they'd all be jumping at the same times- it was amazing.

On the shuttle to and from town, we drove by the coastal resorts, some homes and 'not so nice' areas. These 'not so nice' areas were NOT tourist areas, they did not look like they were 'violent' just like the people who lived there had less money...They are patroled regularly and the driver of our shuttle said they have some of the best tasting 'food stands' and that he visited them occassionally with his own family. BUT, he agreed and told us that there are certain areas of town he stays out of " JUST LIKE TRAVELING TO L.A."...there are places in L.A. and a lot of other large cities I would NEVER GO!!!!! It's the same with Cabo!

While in town, in the shopping/tourist areas there are special police officers on almost every single block, patrolling the streets and tourist shops making sure that the tourists feel safe. They all speak english- quite well might I add and they are always around. We did not feel unsafe at all. We felt relaxed and enjoyed our time there. There were no 'slummy' areas in the touristy spots, and everything looked to be clean and well managed.

The #1 source of income for most people in this area is tourism. They take very good care of their customers and tourists. They know that bad news from there will result in less tourists.

It is a beautiful area to go. It is FAMILY FRIENDLY and SAFER than MOST large US cities. I would go again in a heartbeat and take my kids knowing that I felt safe. There were many other families that stayed at our resort, many honeymooners, many large family groups, lots of people with young kids. Everyone we talked to said that they felt nothing but safe. NOT ONE single person we talked to had a bad experiance with going to town...NOT ONE.

It was the best vacation EVER and cost us less than a nice resort on a beach in the USA. We were treated like royalty for 1/2 the price.

Don't worry or feel that it's a bad place to go. It's like going to any other country. Be aware, be knowledgeable, pay attention and take proper precautions. It's not an unsafe place to go for US tourists.

It was also very easy for us to get back in to the USA. No problems, no hassles at all. It was a smooth and easy process.

Thanks for the post. Isn't Cabo probably the most Americanized part of Mexico? Even more so than Cancun?

I've always thought of Cabo as a playground for the U.S. rich and famous.

Yeah, it is. I was surprized to hear of how many Americans make up their actual population! It is a playground for the rich and famous- in fact their harbor houses more large yahts and party boats that 'famous' people own than most other harbors in the world. Although it's a place that they go- it's still very affordable for the rest of us and I think that's what makes it even better!

I wanted to post my good experiance, because of SOOOOO many people hearing all the 'bad stuff' about Mexico. People are scared to go to ANY part of Mexico, because of the drug traffic problems (which are NO WHERE NEAR the Cabo areas)...People with out all of the information will just post things like "I wouldn't go their if someone paid me" and others start to believe it because of one or two bad posts. The fact is that Cabo is a very safe place to go, it's a wonderful vacation and you'll get more for your money there than ANY USA resort can offer!

I don't want people to be scared to go to Cabo (or Cancun or Riv. Maya) because it's NOT a scary place to go. I believe that people change their trip plans because they don't know all their information OR they get their info. from people who don't know 100% all about the fact that certain locations are NOT bad there- even though other locations ARE. Cabo is hundreds and hundreds of miles from the Bad Mexico that no one should travel to.

Saying that Cabo is an unsafe place to go, or saying that you'd never go there because there are BAD cities/towns/areas to go to in Mexico is like saying you'd NEVER go to Des Moines, IA, because it's too close to the crimes in L.A. where all the gangs are.

I've spoken to many people, and experianced for myself, that most of these tourist destinations in Mexico are still wonderful places to go and they are SAFER than most large USA cities- like L.A., Pheonix, New Orleans, even Washington D.C. and even ORLANDO!!!! So, if you have no problems visiting these US cities, you should have no problem visiting Cancun/Riv. Maya and Cabo areas of Mexico.

But is it safer than Disney World? I think that's the measuring stick most people use. :thumbsup2

We went to Cabo a few years ago and enjoyed it. I would recommend brushing up on your Spanish; it sure is helpful.

What resort did you stay at?

I really want to stay at the Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Resort & Spa. Any of you been there or seen it?

We stayed at Dreams Cabo- it is HIGHLY recommended by me!!!! We didn't pay that much- got a GREAT deal, and it was very high end. We loved every second of it. It wasn't IN either town, it was between the two. I was VERY happy with the location and 'exclusive' feeling.

My family took a 'fun spanish' class offered though our local library. It was $10 per person and taught us the basic phrases- hello, goodbye, how are you, I am good, I am great, Can I please have..., and how to order off of a menu and tell people what your name is and ask them theirs. It was a good brush up class- because my husband and I both had two years of spanish in college. The people at our resort were amazed that the girls could have a small conversation with them! They were impressed.

Although it was nice to know all of the spanish we did, it still was not necessary. It sure was fun.

how's the beach by that resort?

I guess just to show it is not just Mexican violence that may make you decide not to travel there- the common thread with all the stories is that the laws there are different in regards to safety (balcony railing heights etc) than you would have in the United States or Canada. Lifeguards may not be lifeguards just people watching the pool- no CPR training etc. That's all. Just for information.

But some of those stories involved some reckless behavior on the part of the people injured.. swimming alone, jumping around in hot tubs, leaning up against elevators..

I think it is safe to say that there are both safe and dangerous parts of any country. There are a lot of places in the US that I wouldn't be found dead in.

Are there less safe places in Mexico then the U.S., England, Italy, or some of the other vacation hotspots? Probably. But as the OP pointed out there are places down there that are perfectly safe. I think no matter where you are going, foreign or domestic, it is important to do a little recon to see if there are areas that you should just avoid and just stay away from those places.

Glad you had a good experience.
