We just got back from a week at an all-inclusive DREAM vacation. We went to Cabo. I wanted to help ease some people's fears of going, because this is not an area that is crime filled, nor is it at all worry-some to travel there.
We flew into the airport and avoided the sales people INSIDE of the airport. They are always there, have been there for YEARS and can be a bit of an annoyance, but avoid them and walk OUT the doors for shuttles and car rentals. We got outside and our shuttle was waiting for us. Took it to our resort- NO PROBLEMS at all. Didn't see 1 thing that made us worry or get nervous.
Got to our all-inclusive and it was the DREAM vacation! The girls, my husband and I were waited on hand and foot, 100% of the staff spoke english, they were super friendly and the resort was very safe and we didn't worry at ALL! The resort was only 40% booked, it was their 'slow season' they said.
Our resort had free shuttle service to and from Cabo three times daily, we took it into town twice. We shopped, went on two boat tours and interacted with the locals. NOT ONCE did we feel unsafe. NOT ONCE did we see something that was bad. We saw an area FULL of people, families and workers who WORKED HARD at making you happy with a visit to their restaurant or buisness. There were families from all over there- My family had an AMAZING glass bottom boat trip- a 1 1/2 hour ride to the Cabo arch, visit to the sea lion colonies and a beautiful snorkling experiance that was OUT OF THIS WORLD amazing. We were able to be there to watch the 'jumping fish'/manna rays that jump up and out of the water- attempting to "fly like a bird" and 10-20 of them in a group and they'd all be jumping at the same times- it was amazing.
On the shuttle to and from town, we drove by the coastal resorts, some homes and 'not so nice' areas. These 'not so nice' areas were NOT tourist areas, they did not look like they were 'violent' just like the people who lived there had less money...They are patroled regularly and the driver of our shuttle said they have some of the best tasting 'food stands' and that he visited them occassionally with his own family. BUT, he agreed and told us that there are certain areas of town he stays out of " JUST LIKE TRAVELING TO L.A."...there are places in L.A. and a lot of other large cities I would NEVER GO!!!!! It's the same with Cabo!
While in town, in the shopping/tourist areas there are special police officers on almost every single block, patrolling the streets and tourist shops making sure that the tourists feel safe. They all speak english- quite well might I add and they are always around. We did not feel unsafe at all. We felt relaxed and enjoyed our time there. There were no 'slummy' areas in the touristy spots, and everything looked to be clean and well managed.
The #1 source of income for most people in this area is tourism. They take very good care of their customers and tourists. They know that bad news from there will result in less tourists.
It is a beautiful area to go. It is FAMILY FRIENDLY and SAFER than MOST large US cities. I would go again in a heartbeat and take my kids knowing that I felt safe. There were many other families that stayed at our resort, many honeymooners, many large family groups, lots of people with young kids. Everyone we talked to said that they felt nothing but safe. NOT ONE single person we talked to had a bad experiance with going to town...NOT ONE.
It was the best vacation EVER and cost us less than a nice resort on a beach in the USA. We were treated like royalty for 1/2 the price.
Don't worry or feel that it's a bad place to go. It's like going to any other country. Be aware, be knowledgeable, pay attention and take proper precautions. It's not an unsafe place to go for US tourists.
It was also very easy for us to get back in to the USA. No problems, no hassles at all. It was a smooth and easy process.
