if you had the option to shorten your hours for the summer, would you take advantage of it?

To cut costs, the college offers this opportunity. You keep your full benefits, work 32 hours per week and 80% of your salary.

I did it last year and hope to do it this year if my supervisor agrees. We didn't have any problems when I did it last year--I took two afternoons a week off so I was here for part of the day in case there were any issues. Summer is a really slow time for us and I loved being able to do this last year but I was one of the very few people that did it. I was a little surpised that not more people did it but the smaller salary is not an issue for my family and I realize that it is for a lot of people.

So, if you were give the opportunity, would you do this?

If it were financially possible, I would! At my old job, I used some vacation days to take off Fridays each week during July and August. I loved it! And really felt much better in the fall when things picked up again workload-wise. It also left me some vacation time to put a week together during another part of the year.

Yes. And I plan on doing this 'unofficially' this summer. I work for a small company and we have no real policies so I will just take LWOP here and there.

At the University I work for we do have shortened hours over the summer. It's not voluntary and really only amounts to 30min a day. As a result it's a small hit on the paycheck but it's so nice to leave at 4 instead of 5.

Actually, we do that, too, but it's still an 8 hour day--7:30 - 4:00 with a half hour for lunch. I do like only having to schedule staff to cover till 4:00 though. Much easier if someone is sick or on vacation.

I'd do this in a heartbeat.

In fact, my kids are getting to the point where they'll be too old for summer camp in a few years. Since I really don't want them home alone during the summer when they're in HS (that's when I got into trouble at that age), I'm brainstorming ways I can be home more. Your option would work. Another one I'm thinking about is going to the office 6:30 - noon, then taking 2.5 hrs PTO each day.

We'll cross that bridge when we get there.

Nope. I've been happy just taking a lot of Fridays off. Same amount of pay but lots of free time to enjoy the sunshine and get things done around the house.

Where do I sign up?!?!?! :yay:

Unfortunately, summer time is actually busier for me (all those construction crews out there "working" ;) )

But, if I could do this, even with the salary "cut" I would!

Life is too short to work it away! :teeth:

We work 4 ten hour days in the summer and are off Friday, Sat. and Sun. Some years I take 2 hours of vacation a day for the 4 days because I HATE working 10 hour days! I love having all those three day weekends! So I'm only working 32 hour weeks but getting my full pay - I couldn't do it if if was without pay!

I would jump at that opportunity!!!! If you can afford it I say go for it!!! I would love to have shorter hours in the summer and my kids are grown so childcare isn't an issue....but my sanity is!!!!

I would love to do this! That way you don't get a pay cut!

I'd definitely do it, but unfortunately the nature of our business doesn't really accomodate it.

Woo hoo! My boss just gave me the okeydokey to do this again this summer!

It's not an issue financially. I mainly work full-time now for the insurance benefits. While I could get on DH's insurance, getting dd on there has been a bit trickier with her going back and forth between living with me and living with her dad. Next year, we'll be able to get her on DH's insurance and I may cut back to part-time year round. Although, she's getting pretty close to the age when she'll be going to college and she gets free tuition here--which means I'll probably be here full-time for a bit longer. :teeth:

Meanwhile, I plan to take advantage of the extra time off this summer. This is the one thing I love about budget cuts!

i totally would. right now i work 40 hours/week, but at unconventional times. even that feels like time off to me just because i can do my shopping and errands without the crowds. i really like it a lot.

I would totally jump at that opportunity! Right now, I'm looking at going back to school to get my teaching degree so I can have off in the summers when my DS is old enough to go to school!

I would love the opportunity to cut back to 40 hours per week instead of the 50-55 I'm working now! :confused3
