we're considering driving for the first time, unless SWA comes out with a great airfare between now and Oct. (which I hope they will!). Anyway, we're actually coming from Bowling Green. Looking at the map, I thought we'd stay overnight in either Tifton, GA or Valdosta, GA. Are there any recommendations/warnings about hotels in those two areas?

Thanks very much!

...and I would suggest you save your money and drive straight through. We've overnighted in Nashville on several trips and it's only about 8 hours from Nashville to WDW. The excitement of getting there makes the time FLY!

Just my 2 cents!

P.S. The last 2 times we've actually driven straight through from Indiana! 18-19 hours!!! In a Toyota Corolla with 2 kids!!!!!!!!!! We're CRAZY!!!

We drove straight through from Illinois, and I too would recommend it if you have enough potential drivers. My husband and I split driving duties, and we would have made it in 18 or 19 hours if we hadn't hit the Atlanta ice storm...that upped it to 24. Just be sure to check the weather forecast before you leave.

The only way it is 8 hours from Nashville is if you average 87 miles an hour. (Time is not what is flying Firecraker, it's the car LOL!) In Georgia a speeding ticket around that speed can cost you about $1,000 (food for thought) It is 695 miles from Nashville to Lake Buena Vista. I am trying not to think about a Corolla going that fast!

On the South side of Valdosata is a good spot. Lots of hotels and lots of food.

Hello neighbor  We have stayed in both places. Last July we stayed at the Courtyard in Valdosta both ways. On the way to Orlando we had no problems and were very satisfied. On the way back, however, we were disappointed. The hotel was short-staffed and booked. We were given a room in wich someone had been smoking. It smelled really bad. :sad2: I complained. The one man who was on duty told me that it was the only room. I went down and complained again that it was not acceptable. He found us another room that was better. It wouldn't have been so bad, but we were tired and he wasn't friendly. He was checking people in and dealing with several other dissatisfied guests at the same time. We paid around $80 a night for this hotel and expected better. There are a lot of other hotels to choose from in this area. The La Quinta Inn appealed to me also. There are plenty of stores and restaurants close by also. We ate a sandwich and got ice cream across the street from the hotel. The chicken salad croissant was really good.
This past December we decided to try Tifton. We stayed at the fairly new Days Inn. It was around $50 and was acceptable. They also had a complimentary continental breakfast. For the difference in price I choose the Days Inn because all we were doing was sleeping. We plan to stay there again this June.
I recommend frequent stops or spending the night. We used to drive all the way through until I had an accident in 2003. I don't really feel that I was too tired, but we're not taking any chances now. We were in Adel, GA when we totaled our van. Not a fun situation. Luckily, no one was badly injured.
I think that Valdosta is about 4 hours from Disney and around 8 hours from us.

I was thinking the same thing CarolA, LOL!

We can make it from Elizabethtown, KY (2 hours north of Nashville) in about 12 hours, give or take 30 minutes. We have a pre-schooler, so the potty breaks kill us ;)

Sounds like we'd be fine in either Tifton or Valdosta. The situation is that DH isn't someone who particularly likes driving and I don't drive on interstates, so breaking the trip up is a must. We're still hoping for some great SWA airfares, but realize that the drive probably wouldn't be AWFUL---I know many here drive down from New England and farther!

Thanks again!

(and hello  to my neighbors!)

Not really info about driving, but have you checked flights out of Louisville? I know there is an airline who's regular price is $69 each way which is a very good price. Last year we hotwired our airfare and paid $131 (out of nashville)round trip. For us, it turned out to be cheaper than driving :)

Good Luck-any chance you want to stop in nashville and pick me up???? :earboy2:

We actually live a small distance from Nashville and we plan on driving straight through. We haven't driven to WDW yet but we've driven to Port Canaveral and it took about 10 hours. On our last trip we left at night so we did stay in Valdosta at a Days Inn, there were several hotels on one exit so it wouldn't be hard to find a place.

Hmm, I've checked SWA out of Louisville, but it was always more than out of Nashville...maybe not! We're the caregivers for my MIL who's in assisted living now, but still needs us to check on her several times a week. I worry about booking on an airline that won't let me reschedule our flights if something suddenly comes up with her (without charging a $100 fee per ticket!) I never thought of Hotwire, either! I guess I could do that pretty last minute?

The thing that's most appealing about the idea of flying is that we'd have 2 nts. on the Gulf Coast (Sand Key) and then a full 6 days at WDW...driving will really cut into that and I KNOW that if we drive, DH will NOT want to take a 2 hour each way day trip! ;) On the other hand, right now flying would cost an extra $750...and when you're trying to eBay your way to the trip, that's a lot of books and toys to sell! :sunny:

Thanks for the ideas!
