For those growing up in the 70s or 80s, this is too funny

the film about the red balloon, and then of course the Disney (usually Goofy) educational ones???

Okay, do you remember a movie where Goofy is playing pool and he's teaching about angles and trajectory and stuff? Or is it just me? Nobody else ever seems to have seen it.

My poor dad. He waited and waited and finally decided it was time to buy a computer for our family. He came home with an Apple IIc. Literally a week later Apple released the Apple IIe- the one that actually allowed you to type with lowercase letters so you could use for something useful like word processing. The only thing we could do with the IIc was play Zork :badpc: .

This thread reminds me of taking our two DDs to TGIFridays...they have a ton of old stuff on the walls....we point out to them the toys we had when we were kids and they are amazed!

I maybe only 15 going on 16 but i remember the answering machines that youhad to hold the botton to earase and the apple computters that took forever to load. And card catolog in school that was a pain in the butt you had to sit there for ever to find what you wanted and by the time you found it class was over. and you had to wait till next time and spend more time finding it again. LOL!!!!

I am happy and Sad at the same time....I remember ALL of this!:o :( ::yes:: How about TV dinners shaped like a TV! In aluminum foil trays, and you had to put it IN the oven to Cook!  ;) Than, my Mom would save the tray and use them OVER AGAIN!:earseek: :teeth:

<font color=navy>I'm a child of the 70's, too, and some of this stuff happened when I was already in my 20's :earseek:

Who remembers the mimeograph machines.... there were no Xerox copiers back in those days! We had to crank the original sheet, and the ink would then go onto the copies -- yellow paper - purple ink ... I still remember the smell.

And if we wanted air conditioning when we drove someplace, we rolled down the windows!

Mentioning people staying home to watch something on t.v because you couldn't tape it reminds me of the mini series. I remember when Roots and the Thorn Birds were on. Everyone was watching them because we only got three channels. That's all anyone talked about. Heaven forbid you miss it! Now, with so many channels, it doesn't seem like anyone is watching the same thing at the same time.

On another subject, we didn't have tivo. We actually had to watch the commercials.

We used to have TV dinners once a month as a treat. We ate them in front of the TV on our aluminum avacado green TV trays! My parents had those things forever!!

Speaking of no air conditioning in cars, how bout the vinyl seats with no air in the summer? Sometimes you literally had to peel your legs off the seat to get out of the car!::yes::

In my era if you had to do a term paper, you had to go to the library, look up the info in something in a series of books called an ENCYCLOPEDIA, then XEROX the info, and type the paper on something called a TYPEWRITER! No wonder I hated school!

If I went to school in the age of computers and the net, I would of liked school so much better!

So true!! We made our share of prank phone calls in junior high, mostly to boys we secretly liked!

Yeah, I remember those days.

Me: "Is your refrigerator running?"

Person who answered phone: "Yeah".

Me: "Better go catch it!"

Such simple entertainment, LOL!

And remember even before VCRs were popular in classrooms, the film strips (this goes back before just our generation) and how the teachers would get all flustered when the film would break...the film about the red balloon

oh yeah. Whenever it was raining and we couldn't go out for recess, they'd stick on that red balloon film! Got boring after the umpteenth time!

Anyone remember the Kodak Disc camera?

And I talked about this on the DIS before: flash cubes, black and white film, and Fotomat. Nuff said! :)

Remember rotary dial phones? No such thing as a cordless or cell phone. Most phones came in the wonderful color of black.

Antennas & rabbit ears instead of cable. Transistor radios with AM, no FM instead of boomboxes.

My Mom had a RED rotary Phone.::yes:: Turned out the President had one JUST like it! And the Phone Company had to come out to your house and HOOK IT UP!:earseek: No going to Circuit City/Brandsmart/Kmart/Walmart to buy one!:p

You guys think you had it hard! Try living in a third world country in those days:

We had 1 TV channel. Government controlled - censorship crazy - never anything good on.

Everything electronics was so expensive. My mom and dad finally got a VCR (beta) in 1985! No microwaves, no cable tv, no video games. We had 3 radio stations at the time.

Rotary phones. Cell phones finally made it around in 1988 or so, and they were huge clunkers that you had to bolt in your car. There was no carrying it around.

Do you remember telex machines and computer punch cards?

And carbon paper for typewriters?

What about putting on your jammies and going to the drive in?? I miss that!

And speaking of school films who remembers those cheesy things you watched in 5th or 6th grade about the changes your body was about to go through? They seperated the boys and girls and the girls watched films about their periods and boys watched one about growing body hair and changing voices. LOL

We had mimeograph at home, my mom & dad used it all the time for business & church. What a mess they were, I swear I can smell them right now just thinking about it.

Rotary Dial? How about a party line and 4 digit dialing? We shared our phone line for several years with the neighbors and could call anyone in town using only the last 4 numbers.

I took a intro to computer class in HS and all we really learned was binary numbers, we didn't have any type of computer in the entire school.

How about being able to stay outside, your mom not knowing where exactly you were, and knowing to come home when the street lights came on. Or, actually WALKING to the movies or anywhere for that matter. Did everyone's mother have the gigantic spoon and fork on the kitchen wall? Someone mentioned about phony phone calls....did you ever order a pizza and have it delivered to a neighbor's house that you didn't like? The delivery guy would be knocking on the door and you would be laughing your head off. How about the Tootle-loop radio? THAT was very cool. How about vinyl records? What the heck is that?

This just brings back soooo many funny memories from our more innocent years. Boy, these kids today....hahahhaha Just think about all the fun they're missing.

Speaking of "rolling down the windows"... since we have power windows, what do you call it now?

I remember when I was 9 or 10 and my cousin would come over to visit. She, my sister, and I would ride our bikes about a mile up to "town" (which consisted of a population of about 500 people). When mom and dad said "be careful", they meant to watch out for cars.

I remember the old "Commode 64's" and "Trash 80's" from high school. It was the only time I remember playing poker being a sanctioned event at school!

One of my best memories is sneaking out of bed to watch the NBC Monday Mystery Theater (especially Columbo). Or listening to Mystery Theater or Doctor Demento on the radio.

Classic stuff.
