For the troops

Hi everyone,
I was thinking of trying to organize something through my children's elementary school's PTO this year for the troops in Iraq. I don't know where to begin though. I have heard that it is difficult to send heavy items over there, so I don't know if collecting stuff is the way to go. Has anyone done this and do you have suggestions for what to do and who to contact to get names/addresses to send it. Thanks DISers!
Any and all suggestions are welcome, I am just starting to think about it!
