Hi! Some of you may know I am in school now going for my teaching cert and MA degree. I am working on a group project in my ed class-we have to teach a lesson on the American Education System vs. Japanese Education System. My part is on the typical school day and how they are similiar/different in each system. I only get 8 minutes to teach my part. I am struggling on coming up with something short, yet interesting and informative.
I am wondering if anyone has any interesting ideas on how to teach this? We are supposed to "pretend" we are teaching middle school children. I have tons of info, but I am trying to figure our what would be the most creative way to teach this lesson in terms of how I set it up, and the method I use to teach it. :teacher:
Any thoughts?

Thanks for taking the time to read my post! :) :wave2:

Wow...im writing a paper tomorrow actually comparing the american education vs japenese education!!
im no help on how to teach it though --but i found a couple of really good articles on Goodmorningamerica.com as they had a story a few weeks back where they followed two japenese students through their classes--

if either of you are interested in getting some first hand info. p.m. me and i can direct you to a thread on the cruise meets board. one of the families that is sailing with us includes a young au-pair from japan. you could p.m. them and perhaps she could share some first hand insight.

Thank you I will be sure to check that site out!

If anyone has any suggested ways of teaching a lesson to students about the differences between a school day in american education vs a day in the japenese education system, I would be ever so appreciative!!
Thanks! :)

How about teaching like you are a Japenese teacher and treating them like Japanese students?
I don't mean the language, but teachers in Japan don't put up with much, and the kids have to clean up the classroom after. Maybe just introducing and telling the kids what their day will be like if they were in Japan?
HTH, I'm a HS teacher.

Thank you Sonya-that was what I was thinking as well. It is good for showing them the differences in terms of classroom and behavior.
I could use an idea for the lesson-like an activity or something. :)

I would think along those lines. Immerse them in the japanese culture for a day. Do everything according to the japanese custom. Hands on real life experience always sticks with a person. I hope they have fun!! It soundslike a very interesting topic.

8 minutes...

Write a list of examples from each culture's classrooms, put them into small groups for 3-5 minutes and have them guess which is an American classroom and which is Japanese. Spend the last couple of minutes giving them the answers.

I also liked the one about treating them as you would a Japanese student, but if you only have 8 minutes, that would be tough.
