We were going to go to Oz Comic - Con (although we are star wars and stargate fans rather than star trek) but the reviews from Saturday here in Melbourne were so bad we decided not to go...

I tried to go to Comic Con on Saturday 30/6. We got there at 10.30 am and found a long line that was snaking outside the door of the Melbourne Convention Centre. Line looked like it was at least a 2 - 3 hour wait...and it was only the line to get inside the hall. There was another line to get tickets. At 10.30 am, they had stopped selling tickets and the people in line were told that there would be an hour wait before they would start up ticket sales again.

When I found out about the second line, I decided it wasn't worth the wait.

Turns out that the organisers had underestimated the interest. They had hoped to get 13K people to the event; they got 23K on Saturday alone.

We didn't see the inside section at all on the Saturday and I gather it was absolute chaos inside.

Armed with this knowledge, I tried to get tickets online for the Sunday. Ticket Master were no longer selling tickets online by 1 pm on the Saturday.

We took the chance that there would still be ticket sales at the door on Sunday and we got up early and headed in. We got to the Convention Centre at 8.20 am and it was walk up for ticket sales. But the queue to get inside was outside the door...in the freezing cold. The doors opened at 9 am and we got inside the hall by 9.15 am.

DH and DS left around 1.30 pm. The situation outside was apparently the same as the day before. Long queue of 2 - 3 hours to get inside the hall; ticket sales suspended for at least 1 hour.

I will say that on Sunday, I thought the "staff" were rather organised inside. They managed the extremely large crowd very well and queue control was as impressive as Disney's. I pretty much managed to get to all the panel talks/Q&As for the celebrities as well as paid $40 to get a signed autograph from Sir Patrick Stewart. He was really really nice and incredibly funny. His son was in town with him and they were an absolute riot!

Your reward for reading through the above....a few more pics then. I'll come back and post a few more later....photobucket seems to be down at the moment.

It was those huge queues I read about - their facebook page was a whole lot of hatin' by Saturday arvo. People who had prebought tickets had to line up for hours only to be told the venue was at capacity. That would make any nerd angry (HULK SMASH style).

Happy to see you got a photo of Corin, loved him as Parker Lewis and in Stargate:) And Jason Momoa would have been a big draw card thanks to the success of Game of Thrones.

Glad you had a good time, the Sunday certainly sounds better planned - but no Stan panel on Sunday would have helped crowd levels.

According to one of the volunteers (the people at the convention were volunteers and not being paid for the work), the Patrick Stewart panel crowd was even larger and longer than that for Stan Lee. Some people in the Patrick Stewart panel waited/queued for 3 hours to get in.

We did glimpse Stan Lee but were not allowed to take pictures of him. I snuck that picture of Corin; even though I wasn't supposed to.

And yes...the VIP/Platinum tix holders were not happy on Saturday. This was all resolved on Sunday and I know there was definitely a priority queue/entry for them on Sunday morning. I don't know if they kept this priority entry going for the rest of the day on Sunday.
