For sausage balls, do you cook the sausage first or add in raw?

I know there are probably some of you that have made the classic Sausage Ball recipe with Bisquick. The recipe I have says to add the sausage, cheese and bisquick together and bake. It seems to me they would be awfully greasy as much fat as there is in sausage. Wondered if I should cook and drain the sausage before adding in? Anyone else make them?

You add it uncooked as far as I have ever known. Yes, Sausage balls are greasy and should be put on paper towels to drain some of that grease off. Good luck!

I just made these for the first time for the superbowl, so good. The sausage goes in raw and everything bakes together in the oven.

I tried it once and cooked the sausage first. It got rid of a LOT of grease.

They aren't a health food, for sure. Traditionally, the sausage goes in raw.

They are *way* too rich and greasy for us to do it the traditional way, so I cook the sausage just enough to drain off most of the fat (which is about 50% LOL) then add the other ingredients. I tried cooking it longer, then draining, but it was too dry, and didn't adhere well to other ingred. So, I just accept the fact that they are more greasy than I usually cook, and make them that way. ;)

Yes, they are cooked with raw sausage. Various recipes call for different combinations of of cheese, Bisquick and sausage. But, I ALWAYS use hot sausage. It doesn't really come out spicy, just more flavorful.

If you find that it is too greasy for your liking, try adjusting the combination some, but always stick with 1 lb of sausage.

Jimmy Dean makes a low fat sausage; that's what I use for this recipe. It helps with the grease factor considerably. I can find the low fat sausage at some (not all) Wal-Marts and my local Winn-Dixie.

Bake them on a rack over a cookie sheet. Really helps the grease drain.
