I've seen many post that MJ was a huge influence on music. Who did he influence? I've never read where any of the musicians I listen to said they where influenced by him. Motown yes, MJ no. So what is his musical legacy? Who are the musicians who he influenced?

How about Justin Timberlake? He's the first one I think of.

Last night on MTV several people called in to talk about his effect on their music, including
Sheryl Crow, Pete Wentz, Timbaland....
And on Nightline several other people did the same, including Paula Abdul and Quincy Jones.

R.I.P MICHAEL JACKSON :sad2:

LETS LEAVE IT AT THAT:mad:

Why? He wasn't a saint.

I've heard on the radio that many performers are saying they were influenced by his music/dancing, but honestly whenever a big star passes away, a ton of other stars start saying they were influenced by that person. Maybe they were, maybe they weren't, but it's a common thing to say as tribute. Think when John Lennon, Elvis, Jimmi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash etc etc died, every star and their brother said they were influenced by them.

not a fan, but appreciate music as a whole. This may be an interesting read

......"Thriller," directed by John Landis, changed the landscape of the music video, cementing in viewers' minds the potential of videos to be both short films and major media events.............

Right, I was wondering who has been interviewed in the past and said he was a major influence on them? You know that is always a question that musicians are asked when being interviewed. Who said MJ before his death?

Seriously? Not trying to be rude or anything but who do you listen to? Almost every major artist that has come after him has cited Michael as an influence.

Mariah Carey
Madonna
Chris Brown
Snoop Dogg
Ne-yo
Usher
Britney Spears
will.i.am
Fall Out Boy
Beyonce
*Nsync
Backstreet Boys

Just to name a few. If you listen to a lot of pop, r&b, and rock music you will hear Michael's influence in there, particularly in pop and r&b. He was the biggest artist of the 20th century. Music became a big thing because of him especially in the 70s and 80s.

Justin Timberlake for sure. Everytime I see him perform I see MJ. It's as though his legacy lives on in him. :)

Everybody.

His music vids are the mack daddy of everyone's. Do you watch Spanish music vids or Indian music vids?

He is still copied today.

Sweety, music has ALWAYS been a big thing:lmao:. MJ didn't start that.:rotfl:

I don't listen to pop. Video killed the radio star and looking good counts for more than talent now. Guess you're to young to remember when musicians could actually play instruments and really sing.

I don't consider anyone on your list a true musician, they're all pop phenoms who will be forgotten in 100 years (with the possible exception of Madonna, shudder:scared:).

Do you guys seriously consider Brittany and Justin Timberlake musicians??????? Let alone ARTISTS? Really? The mind boggles. I can see MJ (as a musician, not an artist), but The Backstreet Boys?:lmao::lmao::lmao:

And by the way, I'm not super old or anything. MJ was huge when I was a kid. I remember ragging on my sister for having a Thriller poster of him when I was 9-10. Even then I didn't like pop.

Oh well, RIP MJ the king of POP.

I saw on BBC last night that an Indian Bollywood producer said MJ was a huge influence on he dance movements in the Indian music videos/movies. Ans I do see that, as I LOVE Bollywood and watch it a lot!:thumbsup2

He influenced an entire POP culture. Just because it isn't a type of music you listen to doesn't make his impact any less or make him any less of a musician or artist. It just means you like different musicians who you would think have more of an impact than he has had.
Others find Michael Jackson to have been a huge influence on the evolution of POP music.

His music videos were a huge influence. And let's not forget the "moonwalk". Everyone tried to do it, and most of us could not.

Michael Jackson will be remembered in 100 years as "THE" influence of music video production along with many other things. He was a great musician, sonwirter, singer and performer and I, for one, will miss his presence in the music world.

I never said it wasn't a big thing before him. He made it bigger especially among African-Americans. Thriller is the biggest selling album of all time. He revolutionized a generation of artists and music. Very few artists can announce they're going on tour without having an album out and have it be sold out in a few days. It takes a few great ones to have that type of appeal.

I agree that very few of the acts out right now have true talent. Image does play a major factor and it doesn't take much to be a big star. There are, however, artists who do sing and play instruments. Justin Timberlake does play an instrument. As well as Robin Thicke, Alicia Keys, Babyface, Prince, Fall Out Boy, Brian McKnight, Maroon 5, Taylor Swift, and Lenny Kravitz among many. For the record, just because you don't do both doesn't make you any less of an artist. We live in a digital age where music can be made without the use of actual instruments. Is it great? Not always but it's not a bad thing either. Music is something that has and will always change.

You really don't believe Mariah Carey will be remembered in 100 years? The biggest selling female artist and the female artist with the most number one songs and the artist who is number two on the list of number one songs behind the Beatles? Wow.

You didn't ask who would still be relevant in your original question, you asked who has MJ influenced. I, therefore, named a few artists that have been big in recent years that have been influenced by him. No, I don't believe all of them will be remembered in 100 years but some of them will.

Yes, I consider both of them to be musicians. They may be too pop for you but they are musicians. They both have a hand in writing their lyrics and in song production. MJ is definitely an artist. He wrote and produced a vast majority of his music. I'm not a Backstreet Boy fan so I can't really defend them. Do you consider an artist solely a person who sings, writes, plays an instrument, and composes their own music?

I never could figure out how to do the Moonwalk. That's one of the first things my sister said when we talked yesterday after the news broke, "Remember how I could do the Moonwalk and you couldn't?" :rolleyes1

I'll always remember Michael Jackson.
