A recent article in NYTimes said that Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Florida would be the battle grounds for the election and that the deciding votes for the president could be cast in Pittsburgh, Columbus, and Tampa.
If Pittsbugh is a battle ground, then Kerry is definitely winning the fight. People were lined up for a half of a mile at least to attend the rally yesterday. The turn out was far larger than the Kerry campaign had expected and at least twice what it was when Gore ran. People are so fired up, young and old, people of all colors. A snap shot of the crowd at the Kerry rally would look nothing like the crowds at the Bush events.
The college students were particularly nice, and the few Bush supporters that attended were treated with respect, not necessarily with open arms, but they were definitely not relegated to a "free speech" zone or thrown in jail.
Mr. Kerry looked strong and confident, and Teresa looked fantastic, but got a bit flustered at some of the college students shouting "57 varieties" and "we love ketchup." What do you say to that? Mr. Kerry came into the crowd at the end of the speech to shake hands, and the Secret Service seemed to be scrambling a bit to cover that situation. My kids had a great time but were too tired to stay at shake hands.
As we left Pittsburgh, it was like a parade, with all the Kerry supporters beeping their horns and waving their signs. It was fun, and my four year old says he wants to do it again next year.
