Laurajean1014,

Maybe you missed the posts several pages back but it has been widely reported:

Reality Gap Separates Republicans From Democrats

"What explains the gulf between the Republican reality and that of the Democrats? One explanation is that Republicans and Democrats “frame” reality differently. As UC professor George Lakoff and others explain, voters in each party have a fundamentally different sense of the world we live in. Republicans see the world as a jungle, where everyone is out to get us, and conclude that Americans need an autocratic leader—George W. Bush. Democrats have a more positive perspective; one that sees problems solved through cooperation among nations. In the Democratic worldview, Americans need a smart leader who is capable of forming alliances. Each view is reinforced by information “silos;” that is, Republicans and Democrats get their information from radically different sources. Republicans watch Fox news, read the Wall Street Journal, and listen to Rush Limbaugh and James Dobson; Democrats watch the News Hour on PBS, read the New York Times, and listen to NPR and Al Franken."

Bush said the economy has turned the corner and will get better.
In this battleground state(Missouri) things are getting worse.
Time for them to vote for Kerry.

Memo: American to furlough up to 1,100 workers, pilots
DALLAS (AP) — American Airlines, struggling with rising fuel costs and competition from low-fare carriers, will furlough up to 650 maintenance workers in Kansas City and St. Louis and up to 450 pilots, the company said in a memo given to employees Friday.
The news came two days after Fort Worth-based AMR Corp., parent of American, reported that it lost $214 million from July through September and expected an even bigger loss in the fourth quarter.

Jeff Brundage, the company's senior vice president of human resources, wrote in the memo obtained by The Associated Press that American has worked for months to "operate more efficiently and return to profitability."

"Despite our success in lowering costs, some circumstances that greatly impact us, most notably fuel, are out of our control," Brundage said in the memo. "Unless things change significantly, we know we are in for a difficult winter."

Tim Wagner, a spokesman for American, confirmed a memo went out to employees, but said Friday night he could not comment because the company has promised to tell employees about cost-cutting measures before discussing them publicly.

Before Friday's memo, American had furloughed nearly 2,600 of its 11,000 pilots and more than 4,500 flight attendants, although it was recalling 610 attendants for international routes. The latest cuts would push the number of furloughed pilots above 3,000.

"We're not happy to lose pilots off the payroll or to put their careers in jeopardy," Capt. Denis Breslin, a spokesman for the Allied Pilots Association, said Friday night. "At the same time, we're also having a hard time overcoming the effects of high fees, historically low fares and historically high fuel prices that are out of control."

A message left at the office of Jim Little, director of the air transport division of the Transport Workers Union of America, was not immediately returned Friday night.

Along with employee cuts, American will shrink its domestic flight schedule by 5% in the first quarter of 2005, the memo said. Also, the company will implement a "simplification that ran this summer in Chicago" and "showed the potential to save millions."

The airline plans to cut 300 to 400 maintenance positions in Kansas City, Mo., and 200 to 250 in St. Louis, along with an undetermined number of maintenance positions throughout the system, the memo said. Flight attendant levels will be adjusted through voluntary leaves starting in January.

The company has cut 400 management and support staff positions this year and is evaluating further staffing reductions, the memo said.

AMR on Wednesday reported a net loss of $214 million, or $1.33 a share, on $3.84 billion in revenues for the three-month period ending Sept. 30.

American said it spent $342 million more on fuel last quarter than in the same three months of 2003 — turning a potential profit into a loss. The price of jet fuel on spot markets along the Gulf Coast has jumped from 88.9 cents per gallon at the beginning of the year to $1.56 per gallon last week, according to the Department of Energy.

The airline expects high fuel prices to continue in the fourth quarter, which is typically a slow travel period, leading to a "significantly larger" loss than that of the third quarter.

Some carriers have partly insulated themselves from high fuel prices by taking options to buy fuel in advance at fixed prices. American could not do that because of its weak financial position, so it hedged only 9% of its fuel in the third quarter, compared to 80% by profitable Dallas-based Southwest Airlines.

In trading Friday, AMR shares closed down 12 cents, or 1.81%, at $6.52 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Has anyone seen the ad where Bush is making jokes about finding no WMD. He's saying nope none over here maybe over there:rolleyes: .Then they show this woman that says her brother was killed looking for them, how can the President think it's funny?

All I can say is IMO it's disgusting that he's always making jokes about his screw ups. Somebody ought to clue him into the fact that his half thought out decision affect alot of people.

Also, I hope when he's kicked out of the white house, he doesn't try his hand at stand up comedy. Every time he makes what he thinks is a joke he does his evil Beavis/Butthead laugh...quite disturbing. Again just my opinion.

It's my sincere hope that when he's kicked out of office that he'll be thrown in jail!

How's things look in PA regarding the election? What's your take on how the State will go?

Actually things are looking great. The local paper reported today that Kerry has a 3% lead. I wouldn't be surprised if it's really more than that. At least locally yard signs, stickers, buttons etc....seem to be about 3 to 1.

Ugh. I just noticed on the "Bush Supporters Only" thread someone posted a "resume" of John Kerry. It says he has no higher education than his Yale degree and no work experience outside of Congress. Duh, he has a law degree from Boston College and worked in the DA's office of Middlesex County, then set up a private law firm. Then he was Dukakis' Lieutenant Governor before he ran for his current Senate seat.

...There are probably other inaccuracies in that "resume" but that one's just so blatant. I wonder if it would do any good to mention it? Nah, they've made their decision, right? Doesn't matter anyway, it was only like 10-12 years of the man's life just dismissed.

I just read this on cnn, it doesn't say anything about pizza, drugs or brownies. Someone here is not doing their job!! ;)

fraud in florida

I will tell you my experience. I voted absentee because I don't trust the touch-screen voting machines.

Anyway, on the envelope that contains the absentee ballot, it says you can use blue or black pen or pencil.

On the ballot itself, it says you can only use blue or black pen. No mention of pencil.

Is this a minor detail or a technicality that's going to be used as an excuse not to count a ballot if someone uses a pencil?

Just to be clear....I wasn't saying you were wrong to be on the Republican thread. Where anyone posts is their own business. I was only joking when I used the word "infiltrated".

Well, I know that. :)

I only posted on that thread because I saw that you were pretty well getting ripped for posting there and I thought they ought to know that conservatives had been posting here as well.

Ripped.....piffle! Wasn't even a flesh wound. ;)

Thanks for being so kind. I do appreciate it! You are right, though, we probably do have a lot more in common than not!

Thanks again for making me feel welcome. No hard feelings?:wave2:

Edited to add...I won't post in your thread anymore unless someone posts to me! Sorry for the intrusion again.

Of course, there's no hard feelings.

And your little girl is adorable. That hair is gorgeous. She looks very much like my DH's granddaughter.

Great ad. I really think the Bush campaign is overplaying their hand big time with all their "fear" ads. This may backfire on them.

Okay, this week I have developed a crush on Bradley Whitford of the West Wing. I am currently watching him on Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO, and WOW, the lovely liberal talking points spilling out of his mouth is makng him even sexier.

I may have to put Colin Firth and Pride & Prejudice aside tonight and continue with my West Wing DVD's.

:)

Someone asked about PA-- Western PA seems solidly Kerry. We were overwhelmed by the number of Kerry yard signs we saw in the city of Pittsburgh the other night. The ratio was probably 10 Kerry signs to each Bush sign.

Someone on the Bushie thread said that Michael Moore was in negotiations to show Fahrenheit 911 on network tv before the election. Could it be? That seems too good to be true.
