For heaven's sakes mom! Leave the gecko at home! Update: 10/19 Jiko's

Tony: Aha, Okay. Hey, Joe! Butch-a he say he wants-a two spaghetti speciale, heavy on the meats-a ball.
Joe: Tony, dogs-a don't a-talk!
Tony: He's a-talkin' to me!
Joe: Okay, he's a-talkin' to you! You the boss!
[brings the spaghetti, muttering to himself in Italian; Tony snatches the spaghetti from him and serves it to the dogs]
Tony: Now, here you are-a, the best-a spaghetti in-a town.

Tony's Town Square is located near the front entrance of MK. The reviews that I read for this place weren't very positive so we didn't have high hopes for it. Plus, Italian food isn't really on of my favorite cuisines, although DS could live forever in a vat of red sauce. Originally we had an ADR for the Plaza but after much hemming and hawing decided that between the two, Tony's was more appealing.

When we first arrived and were greeted by the turn of the century dressed hostesses, we had no idea that the theme of the restaurant would be...LADY AND THE TRAMP! Right there, this place shot up to the top of list (ok, we had only been to one other restaurant thus far so it was short list, but it shot up quickly). I LOVE Lady and the Tramp.

He's a tramp
But I love him
Breaks a new heart
Ev'ry day

He's a tramp
They adore him
And I only hope
He'll stay that way

(just a word of warning if you get the song stuck in your head. Be very very very careful standing in line at the store and singing the words, he's a tramp out loud, as that word has another meaning now then it did in those days. Trust me on this one :))

Legend has it that outside the back alley of the restaurant is where Lady and Tramp had their first kiss over a big bowl of pasta and a-meat-a-ball ;) So romantic, sigh.

We were seated at a window seat in the outer atrium with a view of Main Street. Great for people watching while waiting for your food. I would encourage everyone to ask for the atrium seating. Our waiter looked like he came straight out of the movie! Very Joeish and very nice and went out of his way to assist us in our meal. Without further adoo:

Appetizers:
Can't get them to show up, will come back to them later, sorry, I'm still learning

Calamari - Tossed with olive relish, and served with side of marinara sauce.

Zucchini Fries - Breaded ,seasoned with a creamy sun dried tomato dressing for dipping

Tomato and Mozzarella Salad - Tomatoes, fresh Mozzarella, and Red Onions tossed with Roasted Garlic, Shallots, and Balsamic Dressing.

Entrees:

Mickey shaped cheese ravioli with red sauce.

Usually my 2DDs don't like ravioli but I was hoping with it being Mickey shape it would work for them. And it did do the trick for a few bites but in the end they preferred the appetizers.
P1050156_zps069e09bd.jpg

Chicken Parmigiana - Lightly breaded chicken breast with marinara sauce, melted mozzarella over spaghetti.

DS loved this and despite all his protest that he wasn't hungry, cleaned the plate. Second, it was HUGE. The size of my DD2's head! In fact, this was the beginning of the head size meals.
DSC00291_zps2e1c6d52.jpg

Eggplant Catasta (stack) - Layers of eggplant, fresh mozzarella, and parmesan with marinara sauce

One of the reasons the idea to switch from The Plaza to Tony's got in my head was because I saw a picture of this on the Disboard. Unfortunately the picture wasn't anything at all like the actual dish. I'm not sure if the picture was labeled incorrectly or Tony changed their dish but it wasn't even close. That a side, the dish was very good. Taste like a delicious veggie lasagne. I really liked Tony's sauce. Not too acidic, not to sweet. Just very flavorful with enough chunks to make it feel homemade.
P1050159_zps86fc83f7.jpg

Shrimp Scampi - Linguini with Sun-Dried Tomatoes and Asparagus tossed in a Garlic Sauce

Beautiful isn't it? DH said the shrimp was very good, cooked perfectly, but the rest was very MEH. Needed salt. Which there wasn't any on our table and we were sure if it would be polite to ask for some. Didn't want to insult the chef. In fact, there is a serious lack of salt on the table in WDW.
P1050158_zps7991fcbc.jpg

Desserts:

ice cream sundae

The DDs loved the sprinkles!
P1050163_zps5448b7d4.jpg

Tiramisu - Espresso soaked Lady Fingers, whipped mascarpone and dark chocolate shavings.

This was excellent. Super light and airy. DS hates Tiramisu but tried this one because it didn't look like Tiramisu and said it was surprisingly good.
P1050162_zpse0cdc92f.jpg

Pistachio Creme Brulee - Pistachio Creme Brulee

This was one of my favorite Creme Brulees of the entire trip. It wasn't overly pistachio flavor. Just real subtle and gave a slightly different take on Brulee. Would definitely order this one again
P1050164_zps829b5453.jpg

Special of the day: Chocolate Hazelnut Cake

This was very light considering it was chocolate on chocolate. Our favorite part was the back side with the nuts, lol. Which seems appropriate considering we're all a little nuts in this family.
P1050165_zps866c0797.jpg

So final thoughts. Tony's Town Square is a very cute but subtly themed restaurant conveniently located with nice views of the entrance hub of MK. Great for a cool mid day break from the hot Floridian sun. The food is very good and we would definitely come back here if we ever needed a place to eat while at MK.

$115.47 Subtotal
$ 7.51 Tax
$122.98 Total
$ 23.09 OOP Tip

ETA: I thought the prices were really reasonable considering the portion sizes. We would have been happy with just the appetizers but could've easily split one main dish with me and both DDs.

Next up will be Jiko's. Do you hear that? That's the sound of Gregorian Monks Chanting songs of love to heaven. Hmm? I wonder if that means we liked Jiko's?:rotfl2:

I'm in your writing is very funny! :rotfl: Thanks can't wait to read more.

Subscribing - great start :)
THANK YOU welcome!

You're cracking me up already and it's only your first post! This is going to be a fun one to read! :thumbsup2 Sorry your gecko idea didn't quite go as planned. We have two geckos as pets and I had to cover their ears (earholes) when I read the post to my DD. By the way, my DD has a very cute stuffed gecko and he's wearing surfer shorts with a tribal arm tattoo. He would have been a great addition to your vacation. Sadly I choose not to travel with him but I bring a long a 5 year old sausage, is still in its (his?) wrapper which has its own possible decomposition issues. :rotfl:

Great first review! Sorry to hear that your seafood wasn't quite amazing but I hope you have some great meals coming up!
Sorry Tracerr00, I should have posted a warning that there might be some "inappropriate material" for geckos and or their loving owners. Maybe I should add a PG17 (Parental Gecko) label.:rotfl: Do you let your DS dress up his Geckos? I was thinking there might be a cottage industry in it. It could eventually go global. Maybe even some Disney merchandising. How could people NOT love a bunch of Gecko's in mouse ears, right? Your DS is welcome to join our crazy family anytime!

I don't think there are any issues with your sausage decomposing. Pretty sure those things will out last cockroaches and maybe even Spam. But I do have to ask, ahem, why a sausage? That must be a great story.

Not too worry, most of the meals coming up were wonderful and there's a few more lobsters in our future that, let's just say, had me at hello.

BTW: welcome and thank you for coming along!

Terrific start!! Joining the party!

YES! It's now a Party Bus!!! Gotta find the balloon smilies

Beep, beep, beep. That's the sound of the party bus backing up to make sure we pick you up teetee830! You were faster to the posting trigger than me, lol. Welcome aboard!

Welcome aboard our bretheren Brit!
I'm thinking we all might deserve an upgrade from the party bus to one of those party limo/hummers I saw all over Pleasure Island. Bet they come with drinks too!

I'm going to try to post a picture of a Gecko from a very funny site. Not sure if it will work or not:

YES! it worked. Isn't it adorable?

OK, be back a little later with the next review.

Jiko: The Cooking Place — Features African-style cooking with influences from the Mediterranean coast, India and Europe. Jiko also features South African vintage wines. The restaurant was designed by designer Jeffrey Beers[5] and emulates an African lodge with a color palette in earth tones. The dining room surrounds an open kitchen which includes twin wood-burning stoves. The private Cape Town Wine Room seats up to forty guests and showcases a collection of wine-based sculptures.[6] Jiko means "a cooking place" in Swahili, thus the restaurant's subtitle "The Cooking Place"--wikipedia

Not sure why but every time I think of Jiko I have Lebo M and Carmen Twillie quietly singing in my head.

Jiko constantly has some of the best reviews of all of WDW restaurants and now we know why. I'm not even going to bother to make you guys wait to hear how we feel about this place. This is DS's favorite restaurant at WDW and DH's 2nd favorite (you'll have to wait and see what #1 is) and in my top 4. DH and DS requested a second dinner here before we left. Unfortunately we weren't able to make it back for seconds this time around. DDs couldn't care less, they just wanted to go outside and find out if giraffe's snored in their sleep.

We arrived about 10 mins early for our reservation and were handed a beeper that went off about 5 mins later. We were then taken to what I think was the best seat in the house, front and center of the cooking station! It was like being at the chefs table without having to ooohhh and aaahhh and come up with witty reparte' and name drop with the chef all night long. How great is that?!

One of the regrets I have regarding taking pictures was that I didn't take enough. First I was nervous about bothering all the other guests. Second I was worried that the staff might think I never saw food before. and Third (probably the most important) my family kept eating the food before I could get pictures! So, I have no pictures of any of the awesome bread services or beautiful drinks at any of the restaurants. But to make up for it, I've scoured the internet and came up with the recipe for the tandoori butter that came with the Dabo bread (Ethiopian honey-wheat) and flaxseed focaccia. My DS and I almost started butter knife fencing for the last clump of goodness until we realized that we could just ask for more. TIP of the day: ask BEFORE shedding blood.

TANDOORI BUTTER
Ingredients:

1 pound Butter, room temperature

2 tablespoons Tandoori Spices

½ cup Olive Oil

½ tablespoon Kosher Salt

¼ teaspoon Fresh Ground Black Pepper

1 each Parchment Paper, cut in half

Method of Preparation:

1. Place the room temp butter in a mixing bowl and whip it really well until fluffy with lots of white peaks.

2. Carefully add in the Tandoori spices and mix well on slow speed.

3. Slowly add in the olive oil and let it mix well.

4. Season with the Kosher salt and the fresh ground black pepper. Adjust seasoning if need be.

5. While the butter is still soft, lay out a small amount of it onto the parchment paper and roll it tight for easy storage and portion control.

Appetizers:

Carrot & Celery Sticks - Served with peanut butter

DDs' appetizer, which was nice considering this was probably the first vegetable they had since arriving at WDW (bad mommy!).

African spiced fire roasted chickenFlatbread - With four cheeses, bacon, arugula, and peppadews (the brand name of sweet piquanté peppers (a breed of Capsicum baccatum grown in the Limpopo province of South Africa).

Uhhh, YUM!
P1050278_zps5c2112e6.jpg

Taste of Africa - Trio of dips with assorted breads and house made Naan

The breads consisted of Pappadam, a cracker like Indian bread made from lentil flour.

Poppy Seed Lavosh, a thin crispy flatbread.

Naan, a leavened oven-baked flatbread made with yogurt and flax seeds.

The dipping sauces consisted of Bhuna Masala, curry consisting of tomato, coconut, tamarind, and chile peppers.

Sagh Dahl, a paste or sauce made of lentils, spinach, garlic, and chiles.

Moroccan Chermoula, typically used to flavor fish or seafood, but it can be used on meats and vegetables and is often made of a mixture of herbs, oil, lemon juice, pickled lemons, garlic, cumin, and salt (it's the same sauce they use to flavor the shrimp entree)THIS WAS OUR FAVORITE!!!

Kalmata Hummus, cooked, mashed chickpeas, blended with Tahini
(sesame seed paste), olive oil, lemon juice, salt, garlic, and kalamata olives

This was wonderful.

Artisanal Cheese Selection - Five tasting portions with accompaniments from around the world

The first of many GREAT cheese platters for us.

1. Pave D'Affinois-France (cow): creamy, sweet and mild with a white mold rind

2. Carmody-US (cow): buttery with hints of caramel somewhere between a fine cheddar and an aged gouda

3. Fromage dAffinois de Brebis-France (sheep): a soft, bloomy-rind cheese that is mild and rich while also building in complexity

4. Pecorino Toscano-Italy (sheep): sturdy and nutty with a hint of salt

5. Smokey Oregon Blue-US (cow): cold smoked for 16 hours over hazelnut shells which results in a balance of sweet caramel and hazelnut flavors that contrast beautifully with the sharpness of the blue cheese

Fruit, nuts and compote accompaniments

Magnificent start to our evening. In fact, I could have stopped here and would have been estatic. But no, more deliciousness to come.

Ahh but you'll have to wait as this post is getting way too long and I have a doctor's appointment as I am under the weather and you don't want a sick person driving a party hummer.

Well, it appears I'm all alone on the party bus :drive:  Maybe I'll just post the pictures with as few words as possible.

Grilled Chicken Breast - with ancient grains, Veggies, and Fruit

Bunny Chow and Falafel Durban Curry Vegetables - Naan bread, mango ketchup and harissa mustard and chickpea-lentil cake with cilantro yogurt, wilted greens and peppadew-olive tapenade

Seared Barbarie Duck Breast - Potato and Spinach Masala, Royal Trumpet Mushrooms, and Port Emulsion

Oak-Grilled Filet Mignon - ancient grain pilaf, heirloom pole beans, South African Red Wine Sauce
P1050286_zps257bd0fa.jpg

Everyone loved their dish. The duck came out really rare, although I asked for med/well. The waiter noticed (I would never send anything back) and insisted on getting me another. The second came out (of course) super well done (they always over compensate when you send things back) and a little tough. Otherwise, the flavor was wonderful.

DESSERTS
All very delightful with highly complicated notes and not too overly sweet desserts. Loved them all.

This was my family's favorite Signature restaurant and the only one the men in the family requested a second round.

Oooo I've never seen that black forest dessert from Jiko before - it looks right up my alley!

Thanks for sharing your reviews. I am hoping on!

I love Jiko and it has been a long time since I have been there. I will solve that in just a few weeks, though. Looking at the photos and reading the reviews are making me think about what I want to order already.

I'm in! Sorry I was late...getting back to the real world after my cruise last week and gearing up for my F&W trip!

I'm enjoying your reviews! Jiko is one of my favorite Disney restaurants as well, and I'm glad to hear the desserts were all very good. In particular, the milk tart intrigues me - milk tart is an authentic South African dessert which I've enjoyed in the past (my mom and her family are South African), and I love the idea of pairing it with fig and goat milk-balsamic ice cream. :goodvibes

YEAH! Foodie Peeps!!!

Oooo I've never seen that black forest dessert from Jiko before - it looks right up my alley!
Aloha Roma!
It's so rich and dense, I was afraid it was going to absorb my fork when I cut into it. The Cherries were slightly tart which made the chocolate seem even more chocolatey, if that was possible. I checked several menus on line and it doesn't appear on any of them, so not sure if this is a new regular addition or just a one time special. I hope they keep it because it's a nice exotic alternative to the usual chocolate cake.

Thanks for sharing your reviews. I am hoping on!

Aloha Krissalee!

We loved Jiko. I hope you have a fantastic experience when you go AND PLEASE post pictures and a review! OHHH, almost forgot to ask, what are you thinking you'll try?

LOVE your name Ms Jedijill. Congratulations on the cruise and your upcoming F&W trip. I'm jealous. Won't even try to hide it  Glad you're here.

DONALDDOLEWHIP??!! OMGosh! I can't believe you're here. You're like THE rock star here on the Review boards. It's because of your awesome reviews and GoofyontheHiseas' cinematic picture skills that made me want to try a review. Truth be told, I'd rather post our pictures and have you write the reviews. I just love reading your descriptions of food. I think I've actually gained weight while reading you.

The milk tart was excellent but not in a classic tart or dessert way. I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't too sweet nor heavy, although looking at it you would think it would have been heavier, like a cheese cake. It went really well with all the exotic spices from the main meal. You have to have a tiny piece of the figs with each bite and a sip of double shot of espresso with every other bite. YUM! The ice cream was an unusual texture. Reminded me of a frozen soy milk ice treat (but not in taste), which was strange considering goat's milk seems richer to me than regular milk so the lightness threw me off.

OK, funny story regarding this dessert. So it comes with Gold Leaf on the figs. My DD thought that was strange and asked if it would turn our poopies into gold. Sorry TMI. But it made us laugh so hard that several of the other patrons looked our way. Can you imagine the looks if they knew WHAT we were laughing about?

Sorry everyone. See what happens when I start to ramble? OK, Will continue to focus on the food and simple descriptions.

Your descriptions are wonderful as well - you definitely brought the milk tart to life! I enjoyed the description of the flavors/textures and the humorous backstory. :)

Recently I haven't had as much time to comment on reviews as I would've liked (midterms - ugh ), but tonight was my opportunity to get caught up. I can't wait to read more. :goodvibes

Sorry that Fulton's wasn't better - I haven't been there in years, but it seems that the reviews there are negative overall. Judging from the pics I've seen, the only thing 'signature' about Fulton's is the fact that it offers pricey shellfish dishes. But the food seems to lack creativity compared to the Disney-owned signatures (especially the desserts - they seem very uninspired). :sad2: On the other hand, it's nice to see another positive review of Tony's. All of the desserts sound fantastic, especially the pistachio crème brûlée!

I leave in a week! We're doing the Deluxe Dining for the first time and I need your reviews to get me through the week! I just discovered them today. Quick, go back to the fun and wordy reviews that you started with. I promise to follow along until my flight leaves and then all bets are off.

Your Jiko review sounds sad. Not enough funny anecdotes! Quick, bring back the fun!! ;)

Ugh midterms! Hope they go well for you. Glad you are back, even if it's just a quicky catch up. You're definitely a big part of the fun around this place.

I'm torn about Fulton's. It such a cool location/setting, it seems like they could do so much more with the food. Even if they just want to keep it a simple straight forward seafood house, they should try and provide the best tasting ingredients. More so, as you stated, since it is a Signature Restaurant.

I hope you get to try the milk tart at Jiko's. Would love to hear a review in YOUR words.

Tony's really surprised us. After everything I read, I really was expecting it to be horrible. But it was quite a pleasant break in our day. Also, we saw Mary Poppins walk by on her way to her picture station which is next to Tony's, and a little off the beaten path. We asked the waiter if we could run outside real quick for a photo and he said, "of course !". So the DDs and I got to get photos and autographs with Ms Poppins with no line, then rush back for desserts. How great is that?!

Love the review of Jiko! Lots of great places coming up! I'm in! :thumbsup2

Aloha DsnyMama! Glad you're here!

First, CONGRATULATIONS on your upcoming trip. You're going to have a wonderful time. Deluxe Dining is whole lot of food, but it feels so yummy. I hope you take lots of pictures and share them with us. I love looking at everyone's pictures.

Second, You think I'm funny when I'm being wordy???!!! YES! I'm going to print this out and stick it to my refrigerator and make DH and DS read it every day for a month! Thank you kelleigh1

Ok, getting stink eye from DH, beach day. So will be back later for Teppan Edo and...possibly...a secret alien invasion?

Jiko looks pretty good. I've never been there. I've not eaten at a signature restaurant before, we don't want to waste the credits. I'm thinking of doing the deluxe plan our next trip because there are to many TS meals I want and would have to pay out of pocket for them so I may be able to fit in some signature meals to use up credits. So far it looks like Jiko would be at the top of my list.

Your DD's question sounds like something my son would ask. :lmao:
