For DVC Members, tell me about Selling DVC Points...

Once you are a DVC member, and you decide that you either don't want to use your points or don't want to bank them, can you legally sell them?

How does one decide what the point value is? How do you do it?
Once someone decides they want to buy your points, do you work with DVC to set up a reservation for them?

I noticed lately that points go for about $10-$11 per point?

Do you sell them at your home resort?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

First of all, the correct term is "rent." Selling means you are disposing of your entire contract from now until it terminates in 2042/2054/2057.

Renting out points is perfectly legal under Florida timeshare law (according to my DVC guide). Some reports have it that Disney doesn't like it much, but there's nothing they can do to prevent it. Furthermore, my contract was sold to me with the assurance that I can rent out if I like, as do many corporations, trusts, estates, partnerships, etc. Some companies give out DVC stays in sales contests, to suppliers, to customers, etc.

I have seen points rent between $5-14, depending on demand, eagerness of the seller to get rid of them, time left before they expire, which resort, etc. $10-11 is typical. You reserve for someone who is renting your points just like doing it for yourself (same 7/11 month window).

The Member makes the reservation for the non-Member who wants to go. DVC will not communicate with non-Members.

In addition to the comments above you need to realize that you are not really renting "points" either - since points are useless to anyone except the member in whose account they reside. You would be renting a reservation made using your points or you could also transfer points to another member.

If you are interested in renting a reservation you might want to look at the DIS "DVC Rent/Trade Board" for a sense of how others do this. Once you decide to try yourself, be sure to read all of the informational posts at the top of the board.
