I was just speaking to my cousin who has taken his first trip to WDW and let her kids start their pin collection. Each of them chose a theme for themselves and her DD chose Winnie-the-Pooh and friends. She found all of them except Eyore but found him on the last day and a CM was wearing him. She bought a pin to trade and the CM became a big grump about it, complaining about how hard it was to get.
Aren't they supposed to trade any pin on their lanyard?? He was at the point he amost didn't give it up but another CM went by and he played nice.

Yes, they are supposed to trade.

Are you sure he wasn't just kidding around pretending not to give it up? I have yet to meet a CM who wasn't willing to trade. They were so nice even when you're just looking.

Yes the CM's are supposed to trade, no questions asked. I guess it is possible to have a few CM's that are traders and don't want to let a pin go so that they can keep it, but if that was their plan, they should have just removed it from the lanyard so no one would see it. Not the honest approach but at least it wouldn't have been a negative experience for the child by seeing a somewhat rude CM. Glad it worked out for them though.

I wonder, too, if he was just kidding around. Some like to do that, but I've never come across one who didn't want to give up a pin. We had several who happily gave up their lanyard pins to us.

According to my friend from college (who is now a CM), the CMs pick up random lanyards at the start of each shift and supposedly have no personal attachment to the pins that are on it. I imagine this CM was kidding and doing a very bad job of it! Good for you for sticking to your guns! --H

How do ya'll keep the pins ON the lanyard? My son's were always falling off and he actually lost a couple. They have those Mickey shaped backs and they don't seem to work very good. I thought I saw a locking type of backs at a store in DTD, but I never did see them again anywhere else.

Lockable backs are available and they come with their own "key". They cost a little extra but if you have some rare or expensive pins they are well worth the investment.
