Sales tax will increase from 6% to 6.35% effective July 1, 2011. Clothes under $50 will now be taxed. If you are planning on buying anything expensive, ie tv, computer, you might want to buy it before 7/1 so that CT doesn't get more of your money. Malloy decided to steal from the poor to give to the rich and to think I voted for him. Ugh!!!

I'm right there with you. I think everyone in Stamford voted for him just to get rid of him. Now we're all stuck with him. :scared1:

Do you have a link that mentions that? I haven't gotten a notice from CT about a sales tax increase. I tried checking out their website and see nothing mentioned. TIA

Well I sure didn't vote for him. Don't forget that income tax is also going up as well as reducing our one measly income tax credit from $500 to $300. Plan your taxes accordingly.

Our sales tax is 9.75% and has been for years. If you spend $1 or $1000 its the same. No under $50 clothing exemptions. I can't even remember a 6% sales tax. We do have 2 sales tax free holidays per year though for school supplies......no that was cut back to one day. And we don't have a state income tax (not sure if you guys do) so maybe it evens out.

I don't know anything about CT or its cost of living, but Ive always read it to be one of the wealthier states. I hope this increase will last them for many years so you dont have to see another increase anytime soon. God knows the government gets enough of our money.

That assumption always cracks me up. Yes we have wealthy areas but the majority of people here are hard working middle class. We do have a large portion of low income families as well. The cost of living here is insane. We have high food costs, insane utility costs(some of the highest in the nation), high gas prices, property taxes, personal property taxes, state income tax, high housing costs, etc.

Nah, the concessions he thought he was going to get from the state employee unions to save 1.8 billion $ aren't going to happen, so there will be more increases very soon.

I never understood the taxing of clothing, how is that not a necessity? I always forget how FL taxes clothing too so when I buy a t shirt on vacation, I am surprised by the tax since I usually shop in PA and NJ and both those states don't charge tax on clothes.

I agree. I haven't had a raise in three years (work for attorneys) and we have been denied the raise again. I look every now and then for a new job but there isn't anything out there. My son who is 19 looks also but can't find anything. A neighbor down the street has been out of work for over a year because there is nothing out there. However they keep raising prices on everything. It is so bad financially that I have to live with my parents. We help each other out because they are on social security and I am in a low paying job.

I didnt vote for him either. He is raising property taxes I heard and people are mad because he PROMISED he wouldnt, thats part of the reason why people voted for him! Hes a liar! He says hes not here for a popularity contest, hes here to fix CT! Hes really fixing it alright! Fixing it to put all of the middle class to poor!

While I am not in favor of a tax increase, I don't understand blaming Malloy. He didn't create the budget issues, Jody Rell's administration quietly left office after dumping a huge deficit on the State, yet no one is mad at her.

For those who don't live in CT and can't understand why we are whining about a 6.35% sales tax, we pay heavy property taxes in addition to increasing sales and income taxes.

I think he is a one and done Governor. I understand "sacrifices" have to be made, but they are not shared that's for sure. The middle class and the working poor are picking up the tab for the super wealthy and the welfare recipients.

Taxes wouldn't have to go up as much if we controlled spending, but with a Democratic controlled House, Senate and Governor's Office you can forget all about that.

I also can't wait to see what the unions do when he runs for re-election. They got him elected and he threw them under the bus. He was running radio commercials that made it sound like union members were going to break into your house to steal your TV and first born child. It even had the dramatic music and all. But I bet in the end they back him because they would never dream of backing a Republican.

My father is a retired State Trooper and I have a cousin and his wife who both work for the state. They all voted for him b/c Foley said he would go after the unions and retirement benefits. They said they didn't like what Foley was planning, but at least he was honest and up front about it

Exactly. I voted for him because my son works for the state, and since neither candidate appealed to me, I thought he was the lesser of two evils and would possibly be less hard on state workers than Foley would have been , since Malloy had the backing of the unions. I should have just voted for Foley. I understand why Malloy is doing what he is doing--state is in dire straits. But, at least Foley was upfront and honest about it.

HAHAHAHAHA:rotfl: that is a joke...... most in CT are just getting by.....I know there are a some who are wealthy, most of us just have to live very carefully....sadly,many can't afford to live here anyways, this tax increase is just another minor blip that adds to the whole burden....:sad2: For people like us, yes, we are paid on a scale that takes care of us in THIS state,if we moved to a cheaper place, our standard of living would be about the same, based on pay rates and actual cost of living,so not complaining really... it's def. a higher cost of living than many other places already tho.....bleh- I was used to no taxes on my little clothing purchases!

Yes, Tennessee's lack of income tax is the reason why the sales tax rate is so high. I live in Alabama, and our city sales tax rate is 8% and we have to pay income tax. However, we have ridiculously low property taxes.

My DH is from Connecticut, and his family still lives there. My BIL told me what they pay in property taxes each year, and I was shocked! :scared1: What's sad is that houses and property that have been in families for generations are now having to be sold, because the residents can't pay the huge property tax bills on them.

My DH always says he'll never move back there.

WOW your lucky!!!! In California we pay around 10% depending where you live for state tax on everything your buy, income tax, disability, property tax, high car registration fees, one of the highest gas price just shy under $4, deposit fees for drinks, extra fees for trash, if you buy a TV or any electronics, and they are talking of us paying for fees to help the state get out of it's overspending. Oh.. and most citites and counties now also charge if they come out for anything for any type of fire/ paramedic services.

This really is a bummer. We don't live in CT, but both DH and my family do and we really wish we could move back there. I don't think it will ever happen because the cost of living is so high and we'd never find jobs that would support us at a decent middle class standard. It is really depressing to think that you are exiled from your family because you are priced out of living near them. :sad2:

I feel for the people of CT and I hope things get better!

It is SO frustrating here. We chose to settle here, after considering moving early in our marriage, and we own a home. I hate seeing bad decisions made, and I fear that the cost of living may drive my kids away at adulthood. I certainly won't retire here.

I though both governor choices were lousy, also.

Dh and I have decent jobs, thankfully-but because it's a job where you earn the same no matter where in the US you live, it's amazing to see the difference that cost of living makes! :scared1: We do ok, but we are definetely working-middle class.

The 'wealthy' part of CT is another planet, to me. I live near some of the poorest, most violent cities in the nation. I work in one. Dh is a native of another one. I don't think Malloy is living at 990 Prospect! (not sure about that).

The high tax rate impacts all my decisions here. We have to drive old cars because of the high property tax (which is on vehicles also). I love our home but we bought an older home than I hoped because of the property tax, and I might have chosen a different town if I could have.
