A small rant after going to yet another store to find something to wear for a wedding.

I've been on the softer side my whole life, not very large but never a regular size. So finding clothes can be a bit of a hassle and the stores are changing due to our expanding society. What really frustrates me is finding decent clothing that is over a size 12. It seems like the clothing industry feels if you are a 14+ you must only want to wear blue, grays and khaki. Their can be no form to the clothing, a potato sack looks much better. And WHY...WHY must everything have some "cute" pattern or decor. Do you think large women find it cute to have a flower decal on every shirt and skirt? Must everything have ELASTIC????

I understand many women may like this fashion, and due to 2 extremely bad experiences at Lane Bryant I have made a choice to never go back their, even though I could find cuter things there.

So are any other women out their frustrated like me? Any suggestions?

Fashion Bug Plus has very cute and trendy clothes.

Have you ever considered buying through a catalog or on line?
I use Jessica London.com, Chadwicks.com and Roamans.com!
Even Chadwick's sells up-sized clothing, decent clothing!
I can relate to Everything you are saying!!! Good luck and have fun at the wedding!

I just discovered Fashion Bug - it's great! They even had Disney tees. Nice undies there, too.

There is a store called Torrid that you might find stuff at. They used to be alternative, but just went mainstream. Lot's of bright clothes. Unfortunately, a lot of their tops are sleeveless. I now have to find a new place for funky stuff. Torrid does have cute dresses, though.

Lerner New York also carries some larger stuff. I am a size 14/16, and I can wear a MEDIUM in some of their skirts...The skirt I have on in the picture below came from there, and I believe they carry up to size 18... Sears' Apostrophe Line also has some cute and bright clothes, too.

My problem is that I have been this size since I was in college, and never got to wear the cutesy little clothes like my friends...I had to wear "momma" clothes...

I shop online at Talbots.com a lot. Yes, they can be very expensive but I try to catch the sales. They have great prices then. Never hurts to check frequently because they always have something on sale.

No you are not! Sweetie...I just looked through your pictures...you don't look to be that size! (see...when I was a 14 - I LOOKED it. hehe) You were a beautiful bride too!

To the OP - I know Gap and Old Navy (the staples in my life) carry up to a size 18 and 20 in some styles. (including dresses/skirts/etc...) My mother just went from an 18 to a 14/16 (she's on south beach) and is determined with all her might to fit into a pair of pants from the Gap. (I've told her that they'll fit her, but she doesn't listen to me...thinks she has to be a 12/14 for that to happen.)

Best of luck...the hunt is half the fun sometimes!

Thank you, thank you! But I am definitely a big girl. I always have been. Thankfully I learned how to dress for my body type a long time ago and hide the big booty. Also.. the joys of being almost 6' tall! (which is another clothing dilemma altogether) I can carry 40 extra pounds (which I do) and no one bats an eye.

some pleasntly plumpt women are sexy

eeyore, Torrid's site has definitely become more mainstream, and they've added some more mainstream stuff (prom dresses etc), but they still appear to carry some of the alternative stuff--serious brand, etc. I was scared to death when I read your post! LOL If you can get past the pink and white website, there is still some good stuff to be found. I love their layered T's (but won't pay $28 for them!)

Thanks, Jason, you just made a lot of women feel better about themselves today! :D

I wear a size 14/16 now down from a 26/28 and even at my biggest I found cute stuff at The Avenue. Rainbow stores and some great stuff at Mandee. Rainbow and Mandees each had a section just for plus size and had nice items. I also loved Fashion Bug.
Right now I still shop at The Avenue for my jeans (14) because I am afraid to go anywhere else yet and have them not fit, like Gap ,etc.
Have fun shopping!

Lands End has nice clothes in all sizes!

I pretty much religously stick w/ Lane Bryant. I know you had issues, but maybe try a different store. The stuff in there is more geared to my tastes by far. I'm in my 20's and I want to dress to "cover my trouble areas" but w/ a style of being in my 20's. For me Fashion Bug is hit or miss. I've found myself being more and more disappointed w/ them lately. Avenue is the same way. I went in there back in August and couldn't find anything w/o elastic waists it seemed. However, the underclothes at Avenue are adorable.

I wanted to add-- check ebay too. I have bought quite a few really cute things that I can't find around here. So far I've only had 2 out of about 50 not fit right-- so pretty good odds so far.

totally agree - when people ask me how much I weigh (and WHY is this information necessary?) they balk and are like "NO!!!"

well jeezum crow - I'm 5'9"...I have room to spread it out! heheh

(and god bless Gap LONG and jcrew LONG pants!)

always wished I was 5'10 or 5'11...dunno why...of course, would suck for my DH cause we are about the same height. (I've learned to love kitten heels...heheheh)

alot of women DON'T know how to dress for their body type...you look so posh in all your pictures!

I was flipping through the "What not to Wear" book by Susannah and Trinny (BBCA show) at Target the other day - LOTS of good info on dressing for your body type...from big ****s to no ****s (me!) from flabby arms to skinny arms, from booties to "where's the junk in the trunk?"

I have problems finding clothes too. I don't want to look old, because I'm certainly not. But, at the same time, I'm not 16. What's really frustrating is that I'm right at a 16. I would love to go to Old Navy and shop, but I find it depressing because although they carry the bigger sizes, they seem to fit me tight. It's depressing to think you can go in and shop at Old Navy, just to have the stuff not fit :( I carry my weight in my stomach area and hips. I go to Younkers, and I can find some cute stuff at Target.

My DH thinks so also. I am now a size 10/12 and DH tells me constantly how sexy I am. He doesn't like these rail thin girls that parade around today. I used to be a size 18/20, so I can relate to how you feel and what you are going through. I shopped a lot at Avenue when I wore a plus size. Now, I love Old Navy and Gap. Good luck on your search. It can be very frustrating. Take care!

I've always had a problem finding clothes to fit me because I am short and "soft". (I had a friend who swore she was going to open a shop and call it "Short & Fat" since all the petite fashions are for size 2!). Lands End and LL Bean do carry larger sizes in regular and petite. Of course sometimes I'm looking for something a little less "pricey". So if anyone has any suggestions for those of us under 5'3 who are a bit zoftag, I'm listening!
