We are planning a big trip next year and want to buy into dvc. However we don't need a lot of points for the years to come. 125 is all we need. You can't purchase new at 125 from Disney so i come up with this.

to first purchase a 25 point contract from resale and then add on at 100 points through disney to get the DP for use of next year. Would this be reasonable or cost efficient?

The only problem with that scenario is that you will be spending a lot more on closing costs/point for a small contract.

Are you planning to finance? If not, why not just look for a contract of the size you need on the resale market?

Have you thought about which resort you want your points at? If you aren't particular about where you stay, you might look at the maintenance fees/point per stay/unit size, and choose that way. For example: If you purchased an OKW resale of a 150 point contract, your dues will be lower than 125 at some of the other resorts. On top of that, the units are much larger at OKW and the points needed per stay are the lowest in the system because it was the first one.

If you are thinking you need the extra years, you might look at an AKV resale and plan to use the value rooms.

If you are planning to finance most of it, then your plan is probably a good way to go, since you can finance the add-on with Disney.

You plan might work, the only problem would be in finding a 25 point resale. In addition to your plan, I would look at trying to get a resale of about 125 points with either banked points or current points. For example, The timeshare store has a 120 point AVK contract with 120 points coming in February that might do the trick you what you need.

It may work but you do realize that if you 25 is one resort and the other points are a different resort you don't combine the total points for an 11 booking window for either resort.

FWIW, where are you planning on buying? If you are planning on AKV--we just bought 125 pts as new members. They are doing a special 100 point buy in until Dec. 1st (so you have to hurry!) for new members, so we took advantage of that. We bought the first 100 pts, then did an add on of 25 points like a day later. Got all our paperwork and sent them all back, it's all going along very smoothly and our points are there to use if we want to start booking! We just did this about 2-3 weeks ago.

So if you were looking for AKV, you may still be able to do this. A lot of guides aren't telling people about this right now because it's almost over. But our guide did this for us only 2-3 weeks ago!

If you don't have a guide yet, let me know if you want the name of ours! She got everything done FAST!

As others have mentioned, buying a resale contract that meets your needs might be better. I suspect that 100 and 150 point contracts will be plentiful on the resale market. 125 points +/- will be harder to find. Not impossible, but there will likely be fewer so you may not have as good a choice of resorts as you would with a 100 or 150 point contract.

You might call the Timeshare Store and discuss it with them. They are a sponsor and can be contacted with the links at the top of the page. I have used the to buy and sell and have been very happy with their service.

It can work but 25 point resales are not easiest to come by and usually are higher price per point than larger point resales; also closing costs/fees on 25 point resales aren't as low as you'd might expect (probably will be around $300 + range).

I agree with the previous poster who suggested buying in with a larger resale that comes with banked points which you can hopefully utilize on trip you want to plan. Just keep in mind resales usually takes 6 - 8 weeks from offer to purchase until the sale is completed & contract is put into DVC system. So you'll want to leave enough time between attempting to purchase and when you hope to make your reservation. Also if Disney excercises its Right of First Refusal (ROFR) then you'd be back at the beginning looking for another resale to purchase.

Add-on contract(s) directly through Disney presently require a minimum 25 point purchase or 50 point minimum purchase if you want Disney's financing. On Jan 15 2009 add-on purchases for BLT will increase to 100 point minimum.

There are presently no closing costs/fees for add-ons through Disney :goodvibes .
Disney will give your add-on(s) the same Use Year month as your master contract.

You may purchase your add-on contract(s) points for same DVC resort you initially purchased at or at any other DVC resort, but points from different DVC resorts can't be combined to make a reservation until 7 months or less before check-in date you'd want. At 8 - 11 months prior to check-in you'd want the points may only be used to reserve at the particular DVC resort they are attached to.

Best wishes planning your purchase :wizard:

Is Disney really doing a 100 point buy in for new members until Dec 1st?

No! It's all a big LIE! :rotfl2:

If they're not, there are a lot of major posters on this board lying about it and I can't see where this would serve any greater purpose. Can you?

The dual closing costs thing is a definate turn-off from buying two seperate contracts. You may be better off just looking for a resale somewhere around your needs. Its not the end of the world if you have a little bit bigger contract then you want. You can rent the points or just have a little cushion in case you needs change.

Yes, they are. In the past, it started out higher at OKW, then dropped to 150, and then 160. That's why if you go out on the resale websites, you'll see a several 160 and 150 point contracts. Recently, Dis dropped the buy-in to 100 points, but I'm not sure if that's only at AKV, or both AKV and BLT.

As far as the Dec 1 date, I'm not sure. I'm sure there are plenty of people out here who have GREAT guides you can call if you're interested. :thumbsup2

LOL, yes, they are! But it's only for new members buying into AKV, not BLT or any of the other resorts. It was a "special" they were trying out for 6 mnths, and that ends Dec. 1st. So if you want to get in on this, you have to get your paperwork started before then! (which would mean this week, really!)

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

didn't know that Disney offered 100 point for new members. Are there any incentives to go along with it? I think either I will either try a resale that has extra points llike o8 and 09 points.

Bob, i can still see you are hung up on the "lie" comment from the sales rep to one person. Take er easy there, I'm sure Mickey and Minney consider you an honest, up front kind of guy.:thumbsup2

As far as the OP's question:

I also think buying from the resale board would be your best bet.
If the only reason you are lookng to buy from Disney is DP and / or financing, I would advise against it.
DP are a one time thing and the DVC membership is a 30+ year investment, the additional cost to buy from Disney can't be made up by getting matching or even double DPs.
If the only way you can get the points is to finance through Dinsey, I would recomend waiting and saving more before buying in these turbulent times.

Best of wishes and hope to see you in your DVC home away from home soon.

No other incentives for this, as the 100 point buy in is the incentive in itself. You would still get the $6.25 off per point on this though, making it $97.75 a point.

What we did was buy in with a Dec. UY. We got Dec 2008 points, will get our next set in Dec. 2009, and only pay MF on the 2009 points. So we "feel" like we got the extra set of points in 2008 (no MF-is like our version of extra points). We can book now, but can't use them until May 09 when Kidani opens (which we weren't planning on vacationing until after). We are planning on banking our 2008 points and using them in 2010 to go on a bigger vacation (YAY!). Good luck with whatever you decide to do!
