For AAA members, if you have kids, there is a free teen membership in some areas

where if you sign them up before they get their licenses, once they do, they get a free roadside service membership for a year. I didn't know about this with my two oldest, and actally paid to add them to my membership when they got their licenses. I just signed my younger teens up.

Not the Northern California/Utah/Nevada club unfortunately, although the Southern California one might - Google shows some links for them on it, but when I try to go to those pages, it forces me back to the N. Cal site. AAA drives me bonkers that way - why not let people see what other clubs offer? Whatcha got to hide AAA? :smooth:

If for some reason you don't want to renew it make sure you call and tell them otherwise you'll automatically be billed for the next year.

My DDs each got a free year of membership because they took driving lessons through AAA. It cost $300 for 6 hours of behind the wheel training, but included a year of AAA. DD #2 just got her license on Tuesday so this was recently.

I'm kind of surprised that people go for it? My parents never let me drive somewhere I might need roadside assistance that first year:car:

Thanks for the heads up. I will have to look into this. As a previous person said my soon to be new driver will not be driving any long distances but you never know when the car may need a jump or a flat my need to be changed while she is at dance class and my DH can not get there. I will be no help with a flat tire ( can not budge those lug nuts - as I tried at 9:30pm this week at dance class)!

We have it in central PA. My son has already learned how to call them...lol. he hit curb and the tire went flat. They came and changed it for him with no problems.

Yep my son hit a curb and blew a tire a mile from home. If we hadn't been around, calling AAA would have been necessary

They are hiding that other areas get better deals than we do. I hate it.

We got it so our kids were protected if they were with someone who didn't have it, they wouldn't be stranded. They did have to use it a few times.

My kids used it a ton the first year, flat tires, dead batteries, keys locked in the car, towing... Heck, dd20 used up all her calls this year, will get more when I renew in May. D19 needed a jump start on a very conjested main road a mile away with little parking, we were happy not to have to jump him ourselves.

I'm surprised that people think roadside service is just for long distance :confused3

I've used it once and my mom has used it once to get our keys from our cars....that you know you accidentally lock in. My mom had done this for her trunk in the garage at work and mine was when I was at a store around town-I was getting out of the car but then had a dumb moment after putting my keys in my purse I just locked the car door with my purse and keys in there though luckily I had my cell phone to call AAA.

I used it when I was just a few miles from my apartment and my shifting solenoid went out...so I had it towed to my mechanic.

I used it to get a jump start (and no one was able to come and help me) when my car's battery went dead...get this....sitting outside of my mom's house on the street when I was 17 years old.

Here's some info about AAA Roadside Service; this is from my area's AAA website which is AAA of MO. I would assume (though I could be wrong) that all areas the definition is the same. Apologies if this isn't the case.

With 5 soon to be 6 drivers in the family, we have gotten our money's worth with AAA, even in town.

Ds once put diesel in his car instead of regular at the local station and had to be towed to our mechanic.

Dh had a problem where his ignition locked up on him while 400 miles away, needed a tow to the nearest dealer another 100 miles away.

Another ds had a breakdown on a city interstate on a Friday in rush hour. He also had another breakdown 200 miles away from home- different auto.

Last night we had warning lights light up on the dash while 300 miles from home, thought we might need a tow. But this a.m. they all reset and so far so good.

Peace of mind with young drivers off at college 5 hours away is very much worth the price of AAA, and even better if it's free.

I'm in Massachusetts. When my dd turned 13 she got a free membership card in her name (not valid for roadside service) through the INsider program. I believe it was valid for flat tires on bikes though. In MA you can't get your permit until the day you turn 16 then if you take driver's ed you can get your license 6 months later. So when dd turned 16 in May she got a AAA card valid for road travel in Nov good until Nov 2017 when our AAA year starts. She got her license in early Dec 2016 so it was valid for about a year.

I was once told if you do aaa.stop it will reset your online aaa so you can enter a different zip code to see info for another area.

I like that AAA is valid for passengers even if they don't have a license. My dd has a license but no car of her own so is a passenger at times still.
