For a long day at the parks: Motrin vs. Aleve

Actaminophen is safe and effective at 4 grams a day. It gets a bum wrap about being toxic to the liver, but that really is just when exceding the maximun daily dose. The problem comes when people don't make themselves aware of what they are taking. Too many people would take their 4 grams on top of other meds that use it in combination (like Vicodin). Same problem with some children's cold meds that have a fever reducer.

:thumbsup2. Exactly, in proper doses, when you follow the directions, it's fine. But, there are people that figure because something is OTC, that it's completely safe to take any old way.

Herbal remedies are something you need to watch too. There are some that can be toxic when taken improperly and if you are having surgery, you need to tell your surgeon and your anesthesiologist about them too.

Interesting thing about Vicodin is that my pharmacy isn't carrying it now. They are pushing a new version. Not because of narcotic concerns but because of too much acetaminophen! I have to say that this cracked me up.

It's still Vicodin, it's just being reformulated to a standard 325mg of acetaminophen per unit. This is a big improvement, because people think of Vicodin as a single thing, and it's not.

It used to be that you could get Vicodin with 500/660/750 mg of acetaminophen. But it was Vicodin, so people expected it to have whatever amount of acetaminophen (and narcotic) they'd had before. Now the amount of narcotic can still vary, but they'll all be 325 mg of acetaminophen (By 2014, anyway). They're doing the same thing with all the combo narcotic/acetaminophen drugs, AFAIK.

I can't take NSAIDs anymore (no ibuprofen, asprin, naproxen, etc), and I've become -very- careful about how much acetaminophen I take. The safe dosing margins are too small for me to be comfortable with as primary pain relief. It's a little disturbing how difficult it is to find 325mg acetaminophen pills at the drugstore.

I agree. :) I have a warped sense of humor and cracked up over the logic. People should understand what they are taking.

So limiting the Vicodin options is probably like adding lap bars to Splash Mountain. It's the idiot factor.

Unfortunatly Vicodin is being WIDLY over prescribed and WILDY abused right now along with a host of other drugs, with Doctor consent and complicity.

I'm sure it is. But that is still unfortunate for those who use it properly. Sort of like when my daughter's class used to lose recess for the actions of a few.

I still call it the idiot factor.

The new drug is called Norco. I am taking it now.

Really the decision between alive and ibuprofen is what works for you. For muscle aches aleve does nothing for me but ibuprofen works wonders. For my hip (cartilage related) aleve worked well and ibuprofen didn't work at all.
So I guess which one to take depends on why you need it at the end of the day. Maybe bring both with?

I have taken Vicodin and I don't understand how someone could get hooked on it. It just made me feel awful. Obviously, that's not the case for everyone.;)
