Hey everyone..
We are planning a last minute trip (last-minute to me, anyway, when I'm normally such a planner!) and I could use any help/tips/suggestions you have for me!
We will be driving for the first time and I'm a bit nervous, although mostly I'm really looking forward to it. The kids have no idea that we're going and are going to be SO surprised!
We will be leaving when DH gets home from work-- right around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 22nd. Hoping to just pick the kids up from their beds and carry them to the van. They're usually very deep sleepers, so hopefully they will just stay asleep! And hopefully we can get a nice 7 hours in before they wake up.
We will be driving from the Hartford area and DH and I will be taking turns driving. I think it might be 21 hours or so? Plus bathroom and fuel stops, of course. I'd like to find a place or two along the way where the kids could get out and run around to burn off some energy.
We do not have hotel reservations yet for Saturday night, since I'm not sure where/when we should stop.. and we planned to take I-95 down, since I think we're leaving at a pretty good time & it will be Saturday, so maybe less traffic? We bought the Drive I-95 book to help us out.
We would like to drive 2/3 or maybe even 3/4 of it on the first day, if possible, but I don't know if this might be pushing it.. guess it depends on how the kids do. I love the idea of waking up on Sunday with just a few hours left. Then we'd be able to hit a park after check-in (and maybe naps

)
Now--
for the drive home, we will be checking out on Sunday, May 30th. So we'll have all of Sunday and Monday to get home. It's Memorial Day weekend, so I'm worried about traffic

and I'm not sure if we should take a different route home. I think there will be traffic just about everywhere that weekend, though.. so at least we've planned for two full days, just in case.
So-- this newbie would really appreciate any tips you have for us. At first, the decision to drive was solely a
budget decision, but I am really excited about this new freedom that driving will afford us!
