A few years ago my family and I would leave our house around 4:00 PM and drive all the way from Toronto - Dalton, Georgia in one day, so we have experience driving all night. While it cuts down a lot of driving we decided not to do that anymore because we find leaving our house at 2:00 AM or 3:00 AM is a lot better for us.

and we dont use the bypass's anymore. when we get to richmond, i ask, are we going around, dw says,stay on 95,go for it! we only used the bypass around jacksonville one time. that takes you so far out of the way. we dont hit any of these areas around the rush hours. the only place (knock on wood) we hit traffic is trying to get out of the lehigh valley!!! 1180 miles one way and its the 30 miles around your house thats a killer!!
Most of the tips on this thread seem to be from Northeast drivers, and the little bit I can find on 75 drivers I can't find now that I'm looking!
Every summer my family and I drive on I-75 so maybe I can be of some help. On our 1st day of driving we go all way to Cleveland, Tennessee although if you want to stop south of Atlanta I would recommend staying somewhere of the Macon bypass which is on I-475 and it connects back to I-75.We're planning on first road trip to Disney..we usually fly. Our current plan (we keep waffling) is to leave on August 8th (early Saturday morning) from southeast Michigan, and drive until just south of Atlanta. It looks like it's about a 12-hour drive to Atlanta for us.
I need recommendations on where to stay the night..we need a suite (I have 4 children) and prefer free breakfast. Our alternative thoughts were to leave in the evening and drive through the night to Disney to make it easier on the kids..but I think that would be awful tough on the adults!
How about thoughts on the trip home? We leave on a Friday, and were thinking of driving to somewhere in Tennessee the first day before stopping.
Since I've never done this, am I way off base?

Well on my families 2nd day of driving we don't actually go to WDW because we would get there sometime in the evening and we don't think it's worth it to pay their rates if it means getting in during the evening. So because of that we drive to Valdosta, Georgia and spend the night there, which means we would arrive to WDW sometime the next day in the early afternoon. However if I had to guess I would say it takes about 10 - 12 hours from Cleveland, Tennessee - WDW.
) and arrive (if all goes well) about 1 am (that's 3 1/2 hours of breaks...I don't even know if that's realistic!). We're staying offsite this trip and it's not much more to add that night. His line of thinking is that he can do the bulk of the driving, and then I can take over after we pass through Atlanta.
But I had several books on CD ready for him.

DH hates to fly so he drove to Orlando from Cottonwood, AZ and I flew from PHX to MCO. His trip to CSR was right at 2,300 miles ONE WAY. It took him four days. No kids at home, so he was alone for the trip.
We drove together to North Carolina after WDW (to visit family) and I flew home from Raleigh. It was another long drive home for DH--2,200 miles. Add that to the 650 miles up to NC and local driving, and we get the 5,300 mile round trip vacation. Good thing his F-150 is pretty new and very comfortable.
