It is best to make the Jacksonville drive during daylight hours if you are making a first-time drive through the area. Why? The locals have no pity for out-of-staters who must stay in the left lane to remain on I-95 before crossing the bridge.

All the best.

KiddFreeper: How long did google have it going that route? I would think it would be a little shorter staying on 81 to 77.

Good luck!

Google Maps: From Connecticut to Jacksonville, FL:

1) I95 all the way ........... 18 hrs, 10 minutes
2) I81-I64-US29-I73-I95 .. 18 hrs, 59 minutes
3) I81-I77-I26-I95 .......... 19 hrs, 6 minutes

No time difference between (2) and (3).

My wife doesn't like truck traffic and I don't like stop-and-go traffic, so route #2 is better for us than #3. Route #1 and #3 is all interstate driving, so there is a certain degree of security in those routes.

But #1 is still my preferred route, only because of the time. Traffic conditions and our starting time may change that.

We didn't drive straight thru in Jan/Feb. We split the trip up too! It was great! The kids did sooo good! We're trying straight through on the way down to "test the waters", so to speak. If it doesn't go well, then we'll split the trip on the way home!:thumbsup2

Watch for us in a light blue Sienna! We're about an hour north of Pittsburgh leaving between 2 and 3 (aka..when DH is ready to get up and drive:lmao:)!

going 9a will just add time to your trip. taking 95 thru jacksonville, stay in the left lane, go as fast as the car in front of you and dont bare off any were. it goes quick. same way going thru orlando, stay in the left lane and dont bare off any were and follow the car in front of you.its like driving on rt22, if you start changing lanes and your speed, your gonna get worked up and messed up. if your in a line of cars going 75 mph just stay with them. its well marked.:thumbsup2

Thanks for this advice. Any other places on 95 to WDW where we need to pay attention to a particular lane? Our first drive down is in 32 days!:cool1:

when i drive any highway, i stay in the left as much as i can. when your in the left lane, you have the car in front and the car to the right to worry about. when your in the right lane, you got the car in front of you, the right of you (entering the highway) and the left of you. three and four lane highways, i stay to the left and drive the speed people are in front of me are doing. you just have to watch for the exit left only lanes. orlando and jacksonville have left exits but if you what the signs over the highway, it shows you what lane will break away and what lanes remain going straight. there are no suprises like we have here in the north, its well marked. just dont drive in the left lane going 55 when eveyone else is trying to do 75.:lmao: you may get some unfriendly waves from the locals.:lmao:

First time 2,000+ mile drivers need to pay attention in MD when approaching DC because of the shift in lanes heading south on I-95. (And it's even more problematic heading north on the return trip in MD).

I agreee with you on driving in the right lane... and when there are only 2 lanes I too prefer the left lane. However, when there are 3 lanes I tend to prefer the middle... yes you can get boxed in, but it always seems the least traveled... and you don't have to worry so much about people entering the highway, but can easily change lanes when your exit comes up. Just my opinion, but works for me.

Just curious, how far over the speed limit do you drive? and have any of you been pulled over by the police?

I typically try to stay around 5-6 miles over the posted speed limit when I'm alone or only a few cars on the road and if there is traffic then I try to maintain speed with the cars around me.

But I wonder if I-95 is a police trap for out-of-state drivers...?

I'm wondering the same thing. I normally drive 5 mph over locally, but we have no speed traps on my local I-80 through north western PA. Also, now that I have tested the GPS, I see that my speedometer is at least 5 mph off anyways (I've always heard that GPS speed is quite accurate.) Thus, I drive 70 in a 65 zone, I'm actually doing the speed limit.

I would kind of doubt that your speedometer is off. What kind of GPS do you have that tells you your speed? Is it your actual live at this moment speed? Or is it your average speed for the trip that you are on. Because that would take into account everytime you slow down for mergeing traffic, etc.
