We tried to drive straight through from Rochester NY once. I still remember driving at 1am through the hills and curves of the WV Turnpike, me and the trucks, trucks, and more trucks. Everyone else was asleep. Horrid. Then by the time we got south of Jacksonville, we had to trade off every hour as both of us were so wiped out. Ever since, we make it a 2 day trip traveling about 12-14 hours the first day and 8-9 hours the second day.

We've tried the straight only ONCE also. The 2 day trip just works so much better for us. We do exactly the same longer first day 12-14 and 8-9 second day.

you guys have a longer trip then I do. I couldn't do that straight through.
when briana was small, we tried it a few times of leaving after work at 5pm. I would drive till about 1am (about half way) then dw would drive for a few hours and I would drive again from 4am till we got there. that cured me of doing that. you would get there and sleep most of the second day away.
we were just lucky to have a child that was a good passenger. she would have had to stay with grammy if she wasn't. :lmao:

324 days to go... :sad1:

Planning in the meantime is fun. :goodvibes

I'm happy for all of you guys who are leaving between now and in August! :thumbsup2

This is a long shot but we are driving from central jersey to Disney leaving on Aug 21st around 2pm. We will be taking the 78-81-77 etc route down to avoid all the construction and traffic on I95. I would like to stop to sleep somewhere around the 10hr mark which I think should put us around Charlotte, NC. Can anyone recommend an inexpensive but clean hotel for the night? It's me and my hubby, and 4 kids. I can have two of the kids "camp out" in sleeping bags on the floor. LOL Any suggestions would be helpful TIA!:)

Sorry I don't have a suggestion. However, we too are leaving from NJ on August 21st and taking the same route, but at around 2am and driving straight through.

I wish we could drive straight through but I don't think we would make it. Safe travels!

Hi all! My hubby and I have driven to WDW several times and enjoy the trip. In January, I am going to have to travel solo. :scared1:

I'm debating whether to get a hotel (probably Rocky Mt.) or if naps at rest stops would be ok. I'm mostly concerned with safety being alone asleep in a car but would prefer not to spend part of my trip budget on extra hotel nights. ;) Thoughts?

In April we stayed here, just N of Charlotte:
16825 Caldwell Creek Drive, Huntersville, NC

It was a good hotel. Here's how I find them: Use Google maps for the area you want to stop. Type "hotels" in the search bar. Start picking them off and check rates, then check Tripadvisor for reviews. If 80% of reviews are favorable I assume it will be at least OK. Sometimes you find one with overwhelming good reviews... winner winner chicken dinner.

Great tip!:thumbsup2

Hmm. Seems like a few good folks will be attempting 2,000+ mile round trips this month. :moped:

It might be a good idea to join them. ::yes::

All the best. :thumbsup2

I sitting here listen to Walt Disney World music on Live 365 and getting together a list of snacks, drinks, food & entertainment to take on our drive to the House of Mouse.:woohoo:
So far I have a case of water (we freeze half for ice packs works great) frozen smuckers Pb&J(kids love),Some lunch meat sandwiches, Capri suns (we freeze some of these too, soda, box of mixed Frito lay snacks. We have sweet snacks; M&Ms & Swedish fish and some gum to chew on.
For entertainment print out maps for license plate scavenger hunt. Cards for card games, we have Dvds picked out; Frozen, Lego movie, The Sand Lot, Goonies and Hook. Of course we will have all our Disney films with us as well.
