For 2,000+ Mile Round-Trip Drivers Only! (III)

Looks like we are leaving the driving behind for a little while. Some flight credits we had from our DL trip will cover flights for the cruise in Sept and most of the cost for Jan. we will save a couple hundred by using the credits and DH may be able to trade his car for sonething smaller and cheaper since we won't need the space for driving.

Another time when it's okay for 2,000+ Mile Round Trip Drivers to fly is when their WDW vacation is less is three nights or less.

All the best. :thumbsup2

I'd say 4. We've driven for a 6 day trip as the minimum.

Soooooo, anyone have any Labor Day weekend travel stories to share? :listen:

Just thinkin... :scratchin

So, since we've had no replies on the thread, I guess I have to decide if I want to be a guinea pig and find out! :rotfl:

Four nights sounds like the correct cut-off for the drive vs. fly decision, since it involves two days of driving going and two days of driving heading home for us (with an overnight stay in each direction).

Hmm. Let's see, a possible birthday stay of three nights in August would result in a (dare we say it) fly-to-WDW trip. And if that's the case, we'll never catch up to dvczerfs!

All the best. :thumbsup2

if i had to take a stab at it. i would say stay away from the road starting friday afternoon till about sat. at 2-3pm. and you wouldnt catch me dead on the road on monday.
never tried it, but i do remember driving home, or should i say crawling home from LBI back in the late 80s on labor day monday. im guessing traffic isnt any better in 2012.

Sorry, no Labor Day weekend travel story here. In fact, we will be getting in from our DCL cruise on Labor Day weekend Saturday and I have made reservations at the Double Tree in DTD for 3 nights and leaving on Tuesday after Labor Day to drive home. Hopefully most of the NUTS will be off the road by then. We plan on arriving home by Wednesday evening. We're older so we make more rest stops along the way and take longer than the 16 hours many of you livning in eastern PA make.

I figure the parks are going to be hot & crazy busy that weekend, but I prefer that to being on the road during that time.

Oh boy, now I am concerned, we are leaving from NYC dock on a cruise Sunday Sept 2nd, think we will be taking I 80 E, wonder if we should bump up driving time.
I think it may be 2 hrs to the Del Water Gap.1:00PM. I 80 mm 262?

We thought to leave at 9AM and arrive, park, board, Not waving to Lady Liberty until about 4pm or 5pm.

"For 2,000+ mile round-trip drivers (except if you take a train, or maybe fly because you want to sneak in a quick trip but only if absolutely necessary) only" :rotfl:

Leaving Friday when dgs gets out of school, was hoping for an earlier start. THis is my first round trip. One we fly down, drove back; the other we took Auto train back which was fun. If it were less $$ I really had a good time doing that. Wonderful for a special event, or anniversary trip.

DS wants to do a straight through, I just can't face that. I want to be refreshed when we get there. DGS has a birthday on Saturday and they want a full day in Disney. Well they will either be sleeping or need to leave a day ahead. That is okay with me. Nope, dgs wants to go the whole 2 hrs.

DD last day is Wed. she home schools so we need to get her work in ASAP to the cyberschool and be FREE!

Packing now as she is studying for finals.
PS someone told me the heat is turned up in Florida and thunderstorms firing up.

i got my time frame done from our trip a few weeks ago.
we hit a bit of traffic in the lehigh valley around rt100 and i78.
heres how we did:

home to i81 = 1 hour / 1 min
i81 to ma. = 1 hour / 19 min.
ma. to wv. = 10 min.
wv. to va. = 22 min.
va. to i77 = 3hours. / 23 min.
i77 to nc. = 26 min.
nc to charl. nc. = 1hour / 44 min.
charl. to sc. = 11 min.
sc. to i26 = 1hour / 13 min.
i26 to i95 = 49 min.
i95 to ga. = 1hour / 7 min.
ga to fl = 1hour / 44 min.
fl to i4 = 1 hour / 42 min.
i4 to exit68 = 54 min.

this is going i78/i81/i77/i26/i95/i4 including drive thru, rest stops and gas stops.
total miles is 1094.

Figures that I would be 1000 miles away, lol.
I have not been camping there since the motor home retired for maintaince about 2000. I wonder if Chief Bob still goes there? I forgot to ask him when I saw him last. All those rural roads, were part of my patrol area.
Hope that it is a nice time, good weather for all.
