Since we are not in a rush I plan on driving 6-8 hours a day, camping 2 nights both ways. Should I pre book a site or play it by ear? I just need a place to tent camp.:cool1:

i havnt camped in 6 years. i pulled my 37ft prowler to mert.beach in 2004 and we sold it when we got back. a few guys at work have campers and they are saying its been hard getting sites. if you are going in the summer time frame, i would call ahead. :thumbsup2

"Forty-nine trips and counting," eh dvczerfs?

We expect to close within one next month with our trip #48; however, all of our pre-2002 WDW trips were by air so it appears that you will always have the driving record. :worship:

All the best. :thumbsup2

We've done the drive in one shot, as well as not to WDW but to Madison, WI or HHI in one shot. The adults like it.

My kids (7 & 4) like riding in the car all day. :confused3 They think the road trip part is fun, so what we've been doing now is instead of leaving on the last ferry and driving through the night, we back it up a few hours and leave, drive not so far, stay over at a hotel, and then we have a full day's drive to WDW (or SC, or WI).

It looks like we'll get an overnight straight shot chance again for our January trip. :)

:thumbsup2 :lmao: sounds like you and i are a like.:thumbsup2 i thinks its the old key west air or something, you just cant wait to get there.:thumbsup2 i dont set the cc, i find a "travel buddy". theres alot of us out there. you get in the left lane, find someone doing a comfortable speed and follow him. keeping in the flow of traffic it seems to work out well for us. your not the first guy going through the radar and chance are your not the last.

I have never driven to WDW straight through, but I was in the military stationed in Tampa, FL & drove straight through from Tampa to Indy & back several dozen times within a 5 year period. Only time I didn't was after my DS was born (he's 13 now) but when he was a baby we always stopped at least 1 or 2 nights on the way, or we flew. Haven't made the drive in over 10 years, so I'm really looking forward to heading down in July!

party: in June!! Yay to family time together. Plus celebrating the DVCZerfs DD graduation!!! And growing up too fast :sad1:

We are hoping we go twice this year. We have reservations but only AAA. I want an AP discount in June, then we will definitely go in November. We loved Christmas time last year and are hoping that Thanksgiving week will be "tolerable" for us. Kids are out of school all week, so no time away, even if we take an extra day or two, no big deal.

Mike declares we are DONE with January/February. Too cold.

We are definitely June every year, and hope to make November a regular thing, too.

Hi all!
I just realized we leave Dis for our long road trip to NJ on Labor Day! :scared1:

Now I'm scared! I'm sure 95 must be a parking lot with everyone headed back up north. Has anyone had any experience with this?

pending on were in nj you are, you can wake up real early, hit the road by 3-3:30am, go up 95 into s.carolina.(you miss alot of the 95 traffic) take 26 to 77 to 81. 81 will take you to either 78, which will head into the center of the state towards newark or you can hit 80 off of 81 and that will take you on a more northern rte. its a nice ride, its about 100 miles longer (about an hour or so longer) but its all open interstate. if you stay on 95, your going to crawl home from south of the border to nj.:thumbsup2

Indeed!

Let's cure that with this question: How many of you 2,000+ mile round trip drivers have done a "straight-through" drive, i.e., from your home to WDW/Lake Buena Vista in one day/one driving period?

Done it three times. First time was just after Sept 11th, 2001, before we had kids. Left around 6 PM, and arrived in Florida around noon/1 PM the next day. Found a room at the (formerly?) Grosevnor resort, super cheap (since they were almost empty), and very nice.

Other two times, we left in the early afternoon (2 PM-ish) and arrived the next day. Once (with VERY young kids), took us 20-ish hours (2 PM to 10 AM). Second time it took us just over 18 hours.

Fixing on doing it again in Oct 2011. THIS time leaving around 4 AM and hoping to get to Hard Rock Hotel in Orlando before the date changes!

We rarely stop for meals, and if we do it is BK, McD or Popeyes. DH packs sandwiches, sodas, snacks & breakfast foods that we eat at the rest stops. It usually takes us about 20 hours, but we usually stay pretty close to the speed limit. I don't want my vacation ruined by a ticket or an accident. Since we are an older couple, we tend to take our time and enjoy the ride.

We stick to +7 on the speed limits...but for most of the southern run of I-95, that means close to 80 mph.

Remember, those speed limits jump considerably south of DC.

What would you do? We were planning on leaving on May 4 around 5 am get to Ga spend the night then get to Disney the next day now I'm thinking pick up grand daughter after I get done at work on May 3 around 4 come home load the car leave around 6 pm drive till we get tired then get up and drive the rest of the way into Disney on the 4th. Leaving from the Harrisburg area and planning on going 15 to 17 to 95 as of now. This would be our first driving trip to Disney This would give us a extra day in Disney although will we be to tired on the 5th to enjoy any of the parks or maybe we could just do a water park that day. Your thoughts

for us, if your not going to drive straight through, traveling in the very early morning the better. you are either going to sleep on the road and get there a day later fresh or sleep at wdw and get there a day earlier and tired. it does feel better to get there a day earlier.:thumbsup2
